Volvo 440 GLT cylinder head? (lower compression ratio)

Post by 340cbr »

After being "forced" to cancel my engine swap (see topic), i've been thincking in other ways of giving my car some more power...

For now it had the B172K with a Volvo 440 GL B18K carb (the carb is from 1996).

I've been searching and i've seen that the compression ratio of the B172K is 9.5:1, and the compression ratio of the Volvo 440 GLT injection is 10.5:1.

I'm wondering if changing the cylinder head to a 440 GLT one will made significant changes.

I also have a B18K engine from a 440 GL somewhere in the garage.. do it have some significant differences for the B172K?

Waiting answers ;)

Take the two heads, and look. Do the same with the pistons. Measure them both with water and a syringe.

we do suffer from the same sort of problem mate :(
could you tell me what sort of power/torque changes did you get with the volvo 440 b18k carburettor ???
and what is the make of the carburettor???
i have got this poxy solex 28 34 z10 on my renault 9 1.7 gtx and i am having all sorts of carb related problems (flat spots ,erratical idling ,high fuel consumption ,difficult cold starts etc)

Mine is a Solex to.. But I don't have any of that problem in mine.

The only problem that I have is that time to time the car simply stops and don't start... lool The starter motor runs but th engine don't start. I don't know why that happens

With the B18E I expect something arround 110hp.

if its not starting from cold ,it might be some carb related problem.
hows your fuel consumption ???

i thought you said you were running a B18K carburettor ????was asking what sort of difference it made ????you lost me there ???

The fuel consumption is OK.

somthing arround 7l/100kms

When I change the carb for a B18K one... the engine seems another! It gains speed easialy, better top speed, less vibrations, the engine noise is now more "stable" and you feel more difference when you press down the acelerator
