Renix questions

Post by classicswede »

As you know Vickys car is a 1.7 with a 2ltr 460 engine. I know the ignition timing is not as good as it could be so I would like to do something about it.
What I was thinking is would a 360 one be any better??
Does the 360 flywheel only have one notch for the crank position sensor to pick up or does it have more.

The other question does anyone have the ignition graphs to comare?

Thanks
Dai

Volvo tending to run conservative ignition timing is probably the 'problem'...especially when running 110 octane fuel (or whatever it is). :)

Supposedly 1.4s run the most advance. There's a graph in the Haynes manual, but who knows which engine it's for. The green book on ignition might well give the graphs - it does for other models (2/700s, etc).

AFAIK all 300s with Renix run the same flywheel pattern, which is 44-4 or something rare like that...bloomin' french!

cheers

Flywheel pattern is 44-2-2 so two holes missing and then 180 degrees and again 2 holes missing.

Anything that has had same pattern is usable, but ignition advance is quite important to get right, what controls ignition in 460?

My renix was atleast crap, with map from haynes page and this megasquirt controlled ignition I got ton of performance gain and also greatly improved fuel economy. It is just bit costly to build megasquirt just for ignition control, I don't know if there is some cheap aftermarket parts, but I guess you would need to build triggering to those...

I can ask my local volvo dealer if he can get me the ignition curves for all the renix units could be intersting.

I'm running on the 1.7 unit. I cant see trying a 1.4 unit doing any harm??

The 2.0 makes about 110bhp, while the 1.7 makes ~90, IIRC.

Would it not be worth running 1.7 fuel injection... the 1.7 also made 110bhp in the 480 afaik.

To use the 4 series renix unit I would need to use the 4 flywheel and crank sensor and then be stuck with a rev limiter :(

The 2ltr in std form kicks out 120bhp with cat.
Obviously I've no cat and a few other mods - however with the wrong timing I suspect it is still only making 110-120bhp.

I thought the turbo was 120 and the 2.0 110?

Curious that the 2.0 is so low, but then it isn't a crossflow I guess, and that uber-inlet manifold isn't going to help top-end. Cam specs would probably be interesting.

cheers

The 2ltr is ok once the cat is gone as I know a 4 series with custom exhaust and a simple sprots filter with a been dyno'd at 140 bhp (flywheel) not bad for only simple mods. The heads do look well flowed tbh.
I would like to play with cams but need to get the thing running better first.
