Engine trouble

Post by Blade »

I have a K engine in my Volvo.

When the engine is cold and i drive without the choke on,before it is heated up.The car runs great and it is really fresh and quick.

But when it is warm it kind of decreases in acceleration.

I have just cleaned the radiator and refuled it with water so it does not heat up as much as it did.The temperature lies in the normal range on the heater level.

My thoughts were maybe the water pump??

Any ideas?

So do you need to use the choke at all to start it from cold. You mention you drive it from cold without choke, so my first thought is the carb is over fuelling.

What type of engine is it? !.4, 1.7, 2.0?

Maybe the choke flap is mis-adjusted - 'choke out' is actually no choke, and 'choke in' is full choke, or something like that. I certainly agree that it sounds carb adjustment related - you need to use a LOAD of choke on my B200K.

To pettaw: I is a B200K motor 2.0L

i dont think it is the choke?
I have to use much choke at startup.

But after a while i take it in,not using choke at all, even when it is not warm enough. Then when i push the pedal it leaps off really good.
Hard to describe actually. But the problem is:

Startup : choke and cold engine, normal for all cars, runs no good.

But after a while, before the engine is heated to normal heat level : choke off and try to gas, it really kicks in good.

When the engine has normal temp : no choke of course, pedal and it does not kick that good anymore, from when it was in near warm but still little cold mode.

Hope you understand what i mean.

Something carb related is amiss - its very telling that it runs 'right' when it ought to be lean. I'll put a fiver on in running rich for some reason too.

Try taking out a sparkplug and seeing if it has any colouration - you're probably looking for sooty blackness to indicate rich running.

cheers

its running rich.

with the car warmed up (very important, make sure its properly hot), find the mixture screw. twiddle it, and you'll notice one way the revs rise, the other way they fall. twiddle it till they are at their maximum, then adjust the idle stop so you are getting 900 rpm. finally check that when you pull the choke in halfway, your getting between 2 and 3000 rpm. job done
