Oil filter thread size

Post by Carl »

This is one for Mac I reckon. Or maybe Foggy if he's feeling clever.

What size thread is the oil filter for the B200 engine?

Thanks

Filter thread.

Post by mac »

Ooer - never really thought about it.

On B14's there was a change from ch.no.896600 (late in the '84' production run) to a filter with an M20x1,5 thread. (until the '85' models an adapter was used to 'convert' the block from 3/4"x16 UNF). I assume (dangerous) that the earlier filter (which was the same as all redblocks) was also this.

I've put a thread gauge on a spare 940 filter B230) this morning and, if I read it right (again dangerous) it is indeed 3/4"x16 UNC.

Note on B14s the colour of the oil filler cap changed from black to red at the same time as the filter change.

In his dotage, Mac.

Adapter

Post by mac »

Good idea - if there is enough 'depth' in the adapter so the sensors don't foul the block - oil pressure sensor is quite 'fat' . Diameter of Volvo sensor is about 45mm.

On the subject of gauges Gavin was asking if there were any other gauges that would fit the cluster (voltmeter, ammeter etc.) Answer is no - but it has set me thinking. I reckon there is enough room behind the blanking plates to take at least the innards of a 52mm gauge and it has to be worth a play around. Do you think there would be any call for it if I could come up with something - I does open up possibilities!

Original oil filter might not fit in with that adapter plate. I know because I have an adapter plate for oil cooler feeds in between and stock original filter doesn't fit. It will hit the engine mount. Filter with lesser depth will fit. :P

Got the blanking plate today Mac - thanks a lot!

I think I'll take some measurements on the car tomorrow to see how well the adapter well fit. It's mainly for the temp sensor so it's safe and out of the way. But I think my pressure sender would screw straight into it so would be handy if it fit too!

Mac
I think Aukki had a play with fitting a different econ gauge into a 300 cluster.
Found the thread at last CLICKY HERE
7th post down in the thread from Aukki, an interesting project.

I'd actually like to see this done, it'd be interesting to see if Aukki got any further and completed the project and what the final look was. I'll PM him about this thread. Good idea Mac, voltmeter, ammeter, maybe even one of these.......if it'll fit!

Seriously though I like the idea, gives people the option of being different and having some gauges in the most easily seen spaces that might be of more use to them than the three options Volvo gave us.

Shame that i'm too busy (and lazy) do something more to that dash.

Some day ill fit one more gauge to the right corner. Perhaps a clock..

different gauges.

Evenin' all,

There really are no new ideas - aukki was there first. I shall still have a play though - I have a mind to see if I can fit a voltmeter (don't approve of an ammeter in a 'daily driver' - too many potential stray amps moving about behind the dash. You really do need to know what you're doing, and a voltmeter will tell you a great deal if you read it properly).

If I can cobble something up I will let everyone know.

Mac.

I'm with Mac on this, it's the reason I didn't think of an ammeter, you don't want to be running big cable unless you know what you are doing.

Pete will let us know what happens with big power going wrong soon... unless he actually does a proper install in his boot

I'm currently hacking together a dual LED and numeric AFR gauge, which is going where the stock fuel gauge is in Kar. (Also hacking up a sexy mod to the rev counter... but that might be finished early enough to go into Fake!)

I know, I know, as usual, the temporary get it in and working, see if it actually works then tidy it up asap when I've got time never happens, mainly because if actually works, if it didn't then there would be more of an incentive. I've got my plans, but time has just meant it hasn't happened, but it will.
