Cam does not affect that at all, differential ratio does, GLT has 3.64:1 differential.

The Vario does have a diff, Hugh you plonker! The output shafts look identical to manual ones. Where did you read it had an LSD?...curious!

cheers

Hmm, having seen it first hand, the vario diff is completely different to the manual ones. Its seems as though its all part of the secondary pulley casings, so you're gonna struggle to fit it into a manual setup. I dunno about the LSD bit, but the vario has some funny stuff in it to keep the belts working properly ;)

Have you seen one in pieces Andy? How about green bookage on the subject? I know the casework is wierd.

cheers

Certainly does look completely different. If it's anything like the DAF variomatics, it does act as an LSD.

No I haven't Foggy, I'm afraid, but I've changed the belts on Pete's vario, and the diff was part of the secondary pulley casings. It was also a tiny casing, much smaller than the diffs for the manual ones.

Vario has same looking differential as other models, that inner part where those toothed gears are (4 of them), check your vadis, 340 and gearbox, secondary unit part 47. Sorry forgot what that part is called :P

There is also exploded view of primary unit.

But gear ratio from vario won't fit as gears are completely different style.

Hmmmm........... acting as an LSD.......... if only the vario system in the 340's could cope with more power!

Oh yes, I don't get it how vario could act as LSD, it has similar design in differential functionality as others, instead of gearbox those belts rotate shaft that rotates differential gears, differential seem to be open type as in other cars, but this is just conclusion from picture I saw in vadis.

well basically, the most a wheel can slip is by having one wheel in 'bottom' gear and the other wheel in 'top' - so if your outside wheel is spinning at 60, your inside wheel still has 100% of power, but turning at 20mph. (for instance). thus, limited slip.

and no, it wont fit a normal car :)

Ok, here is that vario diff exploded, drive to the wheels is exactly same as normal cars, it won't fit to normal cars, but I'm really missing where LSD function comes?

from my understanding, and that picture, that provides drive to one wheel. it is reversed on the other side - essentially one gearbox per wheel. if you look at the picture of one having its belts done you can see - one belt per side of the car. the only dif, as such, is one that splits the props lateral rotation into 2 rotating rods at 90 degrees, but it is fixed - part 52 -55 on the diagram, you can see, has 2 output shafts. the drive somes in to part 14, splits there (but no possibility for the 2 shafts to move at different speeds) then is hooked onto the large pully - part 78. there are 2 part 78s, but only 1 is shown there. the belt is hooked from there to part 11-14 (not sure exactly where) and the drive behind that unit adjusts the gear ratio (on a constant level) and drives the rear wheels. my guess is that reverse gear is also done in there somewhere, but i can't see exactly where.. basically the entire of the 'secondary' chunk of the gearbox is dupicated, one on each side of the car, but obviously reversed on the other side.

does that make sence?

I think there is only one of Secondary units and only one part 47 that is in secondary unit, you can see in exploded pic that there is other half of casing and from photo earlier in this thread you can see how it is put together.

Driveshafts connect to part 47 and other to part 41(big toothed gear), what is from there towards engine is not important actually as that line of parts makes differential where driveshafts do connect, it does not matter how power is coming to that 41 part, 47 makes what diff does and LSD should be in there if there is one.

Part 40 is what delivers power to part 41. Both belts are connected to 40 by axle 39 that goes trough casing. Part 52 is driveshaft.

Or then I'm wrong again :D

You can also compare vario diff to this:

Sorry from O/T, but I think everyone interested from vario and daf should have read this:
http://dafcars.members.beeb.net/DAF2bee ... toryx.html

One pic is from formula car with Vario! I have seen other pic from that car from rear and it had something interesting to our subject too, but my memory has hole right there again :(
