340 for parts

Post by tigersport » 28 Sep 2006 05:51 am

Recently my white 1989 G Volvo 340 DL 1.4 failed its MOT test on two counts, the main brake pipe leading from front to back exploding, and excessive rust along the sills and floor. Other than this it is very mechanically sound, having been regularly serviced at a Volvo dealer and has many new parts on it. As a much loved car, well it is my first after all, I would hate to see these parts go unused, especially after searching for daft things like brake light switches and exhaust pipes when I got told they didn't do them anymore. So along with talking to the local specialist Volvo breakers I thought I would offer it to the enthusiasts before using Plan B.

In terms of the parts that would probably stand out:
A full exhaust system (replaced March 2006, from Kwik Fit after showing them the diagram)
Clutch (replaced October 2005, approximately with 6,000 miles since installation).
A good radiator, the wider model (well it needed new feet).
Four Michelin Energy Tyres, 3 mm on the front, 6 mm on the back
Very clean interior with no stains (heated front seats too)
Strong clean engine with no leaks and very little rust
Fuel tank and new pipes (less than 6 years old)
Brake cylinders, rear
replacement boot struts
intact splash tray
strong gearbox, 5 speed manual
all lights and glasses in good condition.
good battery
Volvo rubber mats
Volvo radio

Unfortunately we have no space to have this breaking down slowly in a corner so well the deal is for the whole car (although well easily removed
small non messy parts like the radio may be sold separately). Add to all this that it currently has no brakes.

As an '89 it should be the later model to fit a DIN slot, not the hooooge dial tuning things!

Welcome to the forum. It looks like a well looked after car and I agree, too many good parts to waste. Hopefully someone will realise how useful this is. It looks like you were committed as you went it search of parts. V3M is looking to try and make as many parts available or find sources for them in one way or another so that cars can be kept running.

Have you had a quote for welding it? As mechanically 300's go on forever if they are well maintained, it's sadly the bodywork that will let them down. If you found a decent and cheap welder in your area, I'm sure he'd get it to a good standard to pass an MOT for you, considering the money you've spent on this car, a bit more might be worth it. The brake pipes can't be too hard either.

I sent him a PM this morning, although it's still sat in my outbox and I don't have an e-mail address for him.

It is a Volvo VC608 (the digital one without the fader control, I guess because I only have 2 speakers) and I have the code, even the booklet for it. It has had a replacement cassette deck fitted by a local radio repair shop, and it is going strong still. So well PM with an offer.

As for the welding, yes I did get a quote from the welder I use for most of my repairs (actually the guy that did it last year). I think it was something like £450-600 for this year, and about the same for the work that would be needed to pass the year after so its got the point where its probably going to out run the welder in the end. So well decided to call time on it as the repairs were getting to a sensible limit. Apparently the floor is separating from the body too... it was getting too much. Do have a list of everything the MOT station says is wrong with it...

Did think about the trike guy when I saw it since well he wouldn't need the body, though wondered about the floor...

Okay so have we all got our haynes manual open to page 7.9 and looking at the diagram... no.... okay then...

As far as I can tell the only thing that means there aren't any brakes on it at the moment is that the main brake pipe that runs front to rear has a hole in it (you know the one that starts at the Brake pressure-conscious reducing valve and runs back to the rear setup). There is actually a puddle near the back when you pump the pedal so well I think the hole is that end. The part is apparently easy to get your hands on and will retail for about £15 plus fitting. As for the condition of the rest of the system, well it has new pads on the front (well 18 months old) and the discs, as the kwik fit man said, go on forever and ever... (I know they are on the front...). As for the rear I think they have some years in them, although the other pipes back there do have a little corrosion.

As for price well since the nice shiny exhaust and semi shiny clutch is on along with a lot of new parts... well lets say £200 o.n.o. (pm with your offers).

I would point out that my local scrapyard sells things like the front grille and lights and display consoles, brake light switches for like £10 a hit so you probably could recoupe some of your outlay. Just a thought, look forward to hearing the offer. (Well I had to justify the price didn't I?)

Also well do you need the radio as it seems Vart would like that...

Yo Tigersport

Too expensive for me and i will have to add on another 120 odd quid to have it brought down to me.

Thanks to all of you for thinking of me on this one.

To be honest a fairly rusty 340 with no brakes isn't worth £200 despite the new parts on it. You can buy a car with tax and MOT for that kind of money in solid condition.

Okay the pictures are useless at the moment and I will add to them, but here are some of the car... http://s51.photobucket.com/albums/f358/ ... ort/Volvo/

Yeah you're correct, £200 is too much for the car and that's why I never expected to get that, but the negotiations needed a starting point and that was the one I chose. Still I am sure if you had the space to strip it you could make more than £200, you don't even need to sell most of the stuff that expensively.

Still you will see from the pictures that the majority of rust is actually underneath the car, and just happens to be in nasty spots. Anyway the plastic parts are in good condition, and well those are running at £5 a go at the local scrapyard, metal parts are £10, and electrical are in between the two.

So just offer if you want the car, a part, or anything. I do have the service history for my time with it as the second owner.

Anyway there is a offer I am researching...

True dat, My '60 only cost £175 and it's in great nick! I sold ray for £80, and I doubt that needed more than another £50 to get through the MOT.

Yeah and what was your 360 offer for before you made the offer? I seem to remember this car was £2,000 when advertised (not bad it had 48,000 miles on it at the time), and yet we only paid £1,500.

Now the car has done 86,000, and still runs like a trooper, in fact would have passed the emissions test straight on arriving, before the oil change and tuning.

Pictures should be fixed.

And well as I have consulted with a whole heap of people about this car (most of my badminton club) and well to stop the impossible dream.... £150 now...

This car is worth what people are willing to pay for it - I reckon you'd be lucky to get 50 quid for it :? and it's probably worth £25...
