Chris_C wrote:As they said, swings and roundabouts, 360's lazy power, renualt engines you need to rev, but they respond well. TBH, I'd go for a 1.7 over a carb 360, but you'll be happy on either GLT or a 1.7! See whats about, and put rust advoidance as your top priority
I agree completely with this, having driven both the 1.7 and the 2.0 carb. In the real world the '60 needs to be thought about when trying to build up decent speed, the 1.7, though not as quick, was far more "point and press" as you got fairly instant response. The '60 is faster provided you're in the right gear.

That said, I think you'd have to be nuts to get anything but a GLT if you want to rally it, the extra power is too hard to ignore!

welded diff isnt the best for drifting, just FAR better than an open diff.

and TBH id expect a welder is far better than a open one for rallying and hillclimbing too!

speaking to the best 300 series volvo drifters there is IMO, ie Sid and Nev, they both say a 1.7 340 is the best, and theyve tried them all, 340s and 360s, and have serious skills.

Obv once modding you take your pick (i pick a 1.4 340 ;) ) depending on what your plans are.

main thing is they ALL slow as fook as std, its not what the car can do, its how you can drive it, ignore the power, it hasnt got any, just build up your skills.

By the way, im a motoring journalist ;)

All the 300's are going to fine for drifting. On your tight budget I would not be fussy. If you do have the choice then the 1.7 is the better starter car by the looks of thinks.

The important thing is the way you set the car up.

If you are intersted I have a 340 1.7 saloon available.

Not convinced a welded diff would be any good rallying. It would be useful in some circumstances, but with all the tight and twisty bits surely you'd just end up breaking it?

Seriously, we need LSD - in my opinion this mod would improve the 300 radically.

It's going to be expensive, probably around the £600 mark and we'd probably need at least 10 takers, but with all the dorifto interest we could probably make it happen

I've been told that £500 would secure a diff which would walk all over the Quaife, and it would be a 'for one' price...but there is unlikely to be much in the way of a quantity discount.

Can't reveal my sources ;) I've to deliver a diff to a man in a pub car park (that's the clue right there), and he'll get a mate to take a look at it.
