1.7 Turbo
1.7 Turbo
Hi all, I know there's been a lot of 'drift' bashing, and I completely understand why. I am looking to get a 340 for a drifting, but I'm not looking to use it as a disposable toy. It's going to be my main car as well, so I'm not looking to break it, or damage it too much. It will be drifted, but the main reasons for the choice of car are:
Reliability, strength of vehicle, cost of parts and the actual abillity of the car as a drift car (speed of direction change etc).
We used to own a 340 in my family, so the car does have a place in my heart.
As a result of all this...
I've been offered a car, already with lowering blocks, bucket seats, harness, welded diff and have also looked into the possibility of replacing the engine with a well prepared 1.7 turbo lump from a 440 (currently in the offers section).
My question is (finally): What is the 1.7 turbo lump capable of putting out?
I'd also be interested to know whether it's quite rev-happy, or if it's got a nasty tendancy to throw the rods, do i need a massive intercooler on the 340 etc.
The other option is going to be the popular 16v swapover, but I've always been a huge fan of turbo engines.
Any advice, greatfully received. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
The 1.7 turbo conversion has been talked about a lot. I should be launching soon a complete stainless exhaust and manifold conversion kit for this job. Most aspects of the conversion can be found by doing a search.
It is a very rev happy engine. My old n/a version of the same block would rev well over 7000 rpm no trouble (I dont do it now with very fresh engine).
In std form the 1.7 turbo should be making 120bhp. With change in exhaust you should be looking close to 140bhp.
From what I remeber the bottom end is good for 200bhp but over that you need to change rods.
If your going to drive it hard with that kind of power I would think you will need to upgrade the prop.

Thanks mate, that's exactly the kind of information I was looking for.
I did have a look through a load of search results, but obviously wasn't looking in the right places, sorry about that.
Hopefully will get all this sorted before too far into the new year, so may well be looking to you for some parts.
I haven't had a look into the engine a lot, but is it going to need an intercooler on the 340? If so, do you know of any that will do the job... how much body modification needs to be done to make it viable?
Thanks.

Yes, you'll want to run it intercooled. I'm sure there's an option which will drop in in front of the radiator - take a measurement, then go scrap yard hunting
Huskyracer is making ~210hp with a Cossie Garrett T3 and programmable EMS. That's enough to net him a low 14s 1/4 mile time. In a car which is probably still under the ton, it's fairly brisk.
cheers
James

No doubt you need a IC...
From my experience with 440's you can go up to 150hp just bu changing the Turbo pressure... Originally is arround 0.3 and there are a lot of them making 0.6/0.7 without big problems.
With modded ECU they can make 160/170 hp.
More than that you'll need to change severall things (Turbo, injectors,... )

Thanks for that guys. I only asked about the intercooler because I'm currently selling a Nissan s14 for parts and haven't yet sold the intercooler. This was I can put it to one side and then fabricate up some parts later.
The engine I'm looking at already has a larger turbo and injetors, so I'd guess it'll just need standalone management now?

It would be possible to run low boost without an intercoller but who wants to do that
Does it look like the S14 one will fit in and plumb in within reason?
If the engine already has the upgrades and is running fine then I would keep the managment that came with it tbh. Chances are the ecu will have been chipped to take care of it. If you are used to fitting and setting up MS or similare then do it that way. If not then get the engine in and all running them worry about the stand alone managment.

That's what Husky used, but it does locate the IC directly behind the bumper (he made holes in it). It also can only come from one year of Frontera, unless I'm very much mistaken...perhaps quite a late example? My memory is hazy on this subject...
There may well be a better option out there, but this is the best fit which Husky found in an afternoon at the scrappers. I'm working on a little something myself as it happens
It looks like an almost perfect fit, but it came from a lorry
cheers

Isn't that the turbo Griz was using? Nah, that might spool quicker
