Hey all so heres the deal: lately my GLTs mechanical fuel pump has packed up and the engine coughing and stalling etc. my GL carburetted engine is going sweet due to an electrical fuel pump installation
how sanely possible is it to rip off the electric fuel pump from the GL, attach it to the fuel injected GLTs engine and then put the GLTs engine in the GL? o.O
what would the electric fuel pump installation/swap involve? wanting to fix the gl right up as its neater and i like the sedan shape more.. after all this is done it would leave a carburetted GLT with no fuel pump and a GL with fuel injection and electric fuel pump. at least thats the idea.

Hiya, I'm a bit confused by your post. GLTs should have fuel injection and therefore should have an electric fuel pump. Being that is the case, have you checked all the electrical connections such as the fuel pump relay under the bonnet, and also the fuel pump fuse inside the black auxiliary fuse box behind the battery.

Yeah, I'm a tad confused too! The GLT has fuel injection lines from the engine bay to under the car, where the electric fuel pump is mounted on a tray in a recess. If you're to swap the pump, the pressures involved with an electric fuel pump may not be too good with pipework etc designed for a mechanical pump IMO, so those would need changing if this is what you're thinking. I take it you want the fuel injected GLT engine in the GL saloon to replace the carbed engine?

ahH i see. that makes me a noobie in all sortsa ways then, yeah i want to replace the carb for fuel injection, the only factor that brought me to the mechanical fuel pumpage of the glt conclusion is the fact that my GL died in the same way my GLT is dying.. it coughs, and splutters, and stalls, and drives only consistantly for a few seconds. When the electric fuel pump was installed it was all fixed. the same things happened to the GLT.. what else could this be?

That all makes more sense now! The GLT fuel pump is essential, if that isn't working, the car won't run at all, due to the high pressure required. It may be blocked somewhere in the system, resulting in fuel only partially getting through, maybe worth looking at the fuel filter etc, and the filters next to the pump it's self. As it actually runs, albeit not very well, the fuse can't have actually gone, however it could be a dodgy connection somewhere, have a look in the wing by behind the battery, there's a fuse box there just for the fuel pump. Try cleaning all the connections in there and also the fuel pump relay connections, that's mounted quite high up on a bracket the other side of the battery towards the engine block. I think Haynes might some a picture of it. Another option that may be the problem, could be the fuel pressure regulator on the front of the fuel rail. I'm not 100% sure on what may go wrong inside it, probably something sticking and reducing the flow. Andy, aka Pettaw will be able to help I'd think.
Just as a long shot....... my GLT had a loose connection on the positive battery terminal, where there are two spade connector like wires joining onto the postive cable at the same point, with a plastic cover over them, these came loose, and meant it would run, then it wouldn't, just from the vibrations of the engine or road. It might be worth checking they are getting a good connection and cleaning them up.
