My biggest mistake was not using square brackets and italics

Mick, I didn't hear that particular article, but there was something similar flying around a few months ago. Basically, any car that was unlicensed, even if declared SORN IIRC, and even on private property, if reported abandoned or appeared unused could be removed and crushed. Thus leading to that classic, a project for the future, looking unused, yet declared SORN in your own front garden could be removed and crushed if your neighbours reported it.
Stupidity at it's best. Yes clear up abandoned cars, or recover stolen ones, but come on, removing someones private property from their private property because it looks old and unused! Madness. Luckily a few of the classic car magazines got onto it early and gave the people suggesting such ideas some ear ache, and I thought that was the last we'd hear of it.........
It seems not, I'd be interested if anyone has any more info on it.
Pete

Could be missing the point but on my several visits to Ireland over the years I noticed the country full of nice old cars changing into a country of lots of shiny silver cars I was told the government was giving £1000 to people to scrap their old ones This was a measure to stimulate the economy nothing else BTW I only saw one 340 in the city of Cork (this sighting two years ago unfortunately) and it was a rare thing / it had the old type registration with red background and 3 numbers and 3 letters only

Ah, Elvington at night...terrible picture, but I didn't want to fire the flash and blind myself at that kinda speed! That's an indicated 130, with more on tap.

It's BS. I'd also question the logic based on amount of energy used and pollution generator during the production and destruction of a vehicle. It's about 40% of the total energy/pollution for the lifespan of a typical vehicle. That tends to be forgotten...
cheers

Do it! It's not that difficult if you just take the plunge!MJ wrote:Yeah, if emigrating wasn't so difficult I'd consider it.

Wouldn't this % be affected by how long car is used? As some 'green' people demand old cars must be scrapped and replaced by new ones, if cars are replaced in much faster cycle wouldn't that just make all good ideas get thrown out from window as all saving that could be done are wasted making more cars?foggyjames wrote: It's BS. I would like to see how life cycle of cars would be increased and environment friendly actions would be possibility of replacing engines with more economical etc.
Wold is just funny sometimes, as I feel that lot of things which are meant to help reduce pollutions etc. are actually making more of them really.

Over here, they plan on using colour-coded stickers on your car window, different coloured stickers meaning different emission categories. No sticker, no admission to the "Umwelt Zone". Never mind, don't want a stupid sticker cluttering up my windscreen anyway ...petefarrell360 wrote:Back on topic, with tax, insurance and everything else being on computer, number plate recognition, the enforcability of things won't be hard, for anything. I'd imagine they'd install cameras at all motorway or major road entries and exits to record your distance or something like that.

Right, I'm starting a new country.
I'm going to bulldoze the Vatican and turn it into a lapdancing racetrack with explosions, booze and drugs all paid for by the (inordinately large) military, who'll get their funds by robbing tourists once the pope's gold runs out. Anyone with a cool car and a mean stare is welcome, we'll all be constantly drunk, and we'll all have to do this

ALL THE DAMN TIME!!
P.S. the reason the speedo is blurry is because that's what it looks like when you're mashed.

thats about all I pay for mineChris_C wrote:Basically, like, the Golf's wurf 'alf a farthing geezer

but then again I aint some dopey lefty goverment minister with more
( of our) cash than brains and a half thought out idea on pollution issues.
by the way I had my first mot failure out of the four golfs I've had since October ,the 1.3 GTi rep let me down and broke my 100 % pass rate .
being a bit short of time I put it through without doing my rigorous
pre mot check .
you know the one
wheels 4 , check
engine 1, check
drivers seat ,check
and its a bonus if the brakes actually stop the car
drive to mot centre hand over £35.00
1 missing exhaust rubber
1 c.v. gaiter split
a loose passenger seat ( plastic guide slide was missing )
and wiper blades
thought about scrapping it as its an awful lot of work for a car thats only worth £600.00 ,
the bloody parts cost me the best part of £15.00 lol .
but that would be falling in line with the governments wishes and I can't do that can I.
its funny how certain issues with 300's are very similar to the mk2 golf
such as carbs causing problems ,
water ingress .
with the golf its usually blocked door drain holes and lousy door card liners
, sunroof drain tubes or believe it or not rear light cluster seals !!!
but then again they are all about the same age so it could be age specific issues rather than make .
I totally agree with unlicenced cars on public roads or car parks being lifted and scrapped as they are usually not insured either .
( they don't just do it straight away where I live They put a warning 7 day notice on it first ) and I have never heard of cars being taken off of peoples drives without the owners permission otherwise Petes mum would have had an empty driveway by now lol
I honestly cant see the goverment banning older cars , in fact by giving free road tax to cars registered before 1973 they seem to be encuraging the preservation of older cars.
Its a shame they havent updated that as the original idea was cars over 25 years should be free so now any thing pre 1981 should be included.
I think as long as cars are capable of passing the mot they will be left alone after all with the introduction of emissions teating the mot is now more stringent than it has ever been so they can hardly call cars that have passed it pollutants ,
the only thing they can do is make the mot test even harder but that could affect many younger cars as well.
At the end of the day until a proposal is made official there aint a lot you can do about it anyway
