B14 head bolt sizes

Post by shimon340 »

Hello

Does anyone know, or have to hand to measure, the spec of the B14 head bolts?

Im trying to make my own special tool 5083 which from chatting to guys here is merely a head bolt and large washer to keep pressure on the liners once the head is off.

Its been suggested (thanks Chris C ) that they are M10s but does anyone know the thread type? 1 or 1.25?

I've got spare 1.7 heas bolts here but no B14

thanks!

I was very much guessing at M10's mate! If you need to clamp the liners done, somewhere in my room is Volvo Special Tool No. 5454387534876394 that I made up when Andy helped me with Kar's last year at my friendly local workshop.

However, the one problem is as anyone who has dropped into Soton recently to see me will know... the filing system in my room failed slightly a lil while ago, although is currently under re-filing, so depends how long you can wait!

hello!

thank chris for the info. the tool is just a bolt with a large washer on top right? I love volvo special tools like that! you can make your own!!

However, it might be full stop on this car since the cost of a timesert ( like helicoil but has T shaped inserts that cant wind down the thread ) is £320!!!

so we might go the new engine route instead

thats a shame, Im really curious why this car only idles on full throttle! was looking forward to finding out why!

all the best

yeah, the special tool is just a bolt with a large washer on the end to clamp the liners down.

Just out of interest why are you taking the head off when its probably something else that's causing the problem. How much other diagnosis have you done.

If you think the fuelling's causing the problem, have you looked for air leaks at the carb or other fuelling problems?

If you think there's whistling from the exhaust indicating a blockage, have you tried loosening the exhaust downpipe nuts to bleed off excess back pressure?

It doesn't cost much, apart from time to do diagnosis of these types of things. If you go to all the trouble of changing the engine and the cause is something else I bet you wouldn't feel too clever afterwards, and your back pockets wouldn't thank you either ;)

hi there

thanks for the info on the special tool. Any idea what size bolts / threads the head bolts are??

My friends car has two problems. One was only idling once warm just about, when the throttle is fully open ( but fine when cold )

I forgot a certain socket extension whilst checking the spark plugs ( to see if sooted up indicating rich running ) and left my friend at my car with my tools

in a bout of enthusiam, he tried to re fit the spark plug I had just removed and wrenched it in from the outset. Cross threaded and destroyed the thread!!!! This was rather a big set back!

timersert looks a longer lasting and better solution to helicoils which dont lock in place and have a habit of removing themselves and popping out eg james 240 and from my friends experience building race engines and dragsters.

the quote for a timesert kit ( 4 tools needed ) is £320 which is rather outside my friends league!

Ive found an engine locally for £50 so we're going to swap it and I'll keep the old one. Alternatively, I'll just swap the head if I can find one.

one that note, I've started a thread to find out if the reanult 1.4 head from the renault 5 is the same. I know volvo reworked some components for the 340 1.4 but I dont think they had unique heads.

I guess those questions are best for the new post! :
