If that means rustproofing, the manual says every 2 years.

I'm sure if that would have been done every 2 years, these cars (well, any car) could last forever (from the rust point of view). Anyway, my plan is to: get all the rust problems treated, apply rust protection, then inspect thoroughly every year and treat any starting rust immediately + rustproof every 2 years. Does it sound like a wise plan?

Yes indeed, that sounds like a good plan. Having said that, bear in mind that its very hard to treat tiny 'rust bubbles' properly when they first appear.

I must get ye olde 'oyl' on the go when I get around to it :)

I only did the rear spare wheel well. It felt a bit flimsy and i was loading it up with a fair bit of weight so i fibre glassed part of the inside (not sure they really did anything, but it felt better) and sprayed the underneath in waxoyl underseal stuff. I might have done the rear arches too, but i cant really remember.

Hi Guys,
I have a fiat x1/9, a lancia delta hf turbo and a triumph dolomite and I rust proof all of them with waxoil. I cannot reccommend the stuff highly enough. As most people know, old italian and BL cars rust like f*** so its important to rustproof them. I have'nt rustproofed the 340 yet and its beginning to show signs of its age - it'll be next to do. Anyway, so long as you do it every 2 years it should be fine and the car should last indefinitely. It has served my x1/9 very very well and its now 24 years old. After 1.5 - 2 years of use in the car though, the wax starts to get hard and break up so its important to re rustproof the car every 2 years. At most to do an entire car it should take 2-3 hours(including taking off bits of the car such as door panels) and can be a bit messy. But follow the instructions and take care with the brakes and all should be fine. I leave the Delta HF Turbo and the Dolomite outside all year round and the waxoil protects them very well
Hope this helps (and no I don't work for waxoil!)
Cheers,
Paul.

Hi all

Great day at the meet!!

Re. Waxoyl

Do it in the summer when it is warm - the stuff flows into all the nooks and crannies much better. Also the car will be dry, minimising the risk of trapping any water.

Beg, steal or borrow a compressor and a selection of lances - it goes on so much more thoroughly - the pumps supplied can be a bit weak.

If you need any welding doing, do this first!

Make sure that any drain holes are poked clear when you`re done.

You will need tools to dismantle trim on doors etc. - try to work "blind" as little as possible. Some disposable overalls and some sort of hat are a good idea too.

Will

is spray stuff better than brush-on stuff then? and does it just 'stick' to the underside?
