My new Mk2 360 GLT

Post by foggyjames »

Kinda by accident, I've come to own a mk2 360 GLT. It was bought by a friend for the engine (a B19), but then he changed his mind, and now the complete car is mine.

I need to work out what to do with the car. The original plan was to break the car unless it was very tidy indeed. My decision is rather tricky, as the car has turned out to be nicer than expected. It is very nice, but it does have a few flaws. However, for a relatively rare car, my feeling is that this car is too nice to break.

It's well and truly out of MOT, and has been parked for 4 years. It has a few minor mechanical issues (soft brakes and sagged engine mounts being the most serious), but I've driven it a couple of miles on the private road (I LOVE having a private road to use :D) at our storage unit, and there's nothing that serious wrong with it. It goes, turns, and stops.

There are a few scruffy bits of bodywork. Ozzy and Martin bent the front bumper when they pushed into its parking space using my 240  It'll pull straight. There are a couple of nasty dents, although one of them could be removed by replacing the driver's door. It will need some minor welding for the MOT. The front valance is a bit of a mess, but seems to be solid.

Overall - as the picture shows - the car is very clean. Most of the usual 300 series rust-spot are clean - doors are almost perfect, A-pillars are perfect. No rust around the boot hinges.

I'm trying to gauge interest in the car. It's *just* scruffy enough to justify breaking it, but I'd rather not, as it's surely one of the better mk2s still around. It's not a ready-to-run car like, say, Ronnie's lovely 3dr GLT was. It either needs me to tidy it up and MOT it ready to sell (for a reasonable sum, hopefully)...or it needs someone to take it on as a project. I've not got any use for the car myself, awesome as it is. I do love the way this car looks. :D

Having said that, I'd sooner break it myself than have someone with more enthusiasm than time/skill/money take it, only for the parts I'd like to be lost to a crushed in a month or two. No offence...but that is what I bought it for originally.

Whatdya think guys? In a way, it's a shame it's so nice, or the decision would be made for me. Any comments / ideas gratefully received!

cheers

Looks very nice, so I'd say keep it, but it's not my time, money or space :P

One thing I noticed though, all of the window trims are black. Is that a GLT thing? I thought most Mk2's had chrome, like many of the earlier/lower spec Mk3's.

The chrome gets to look bad with age, and I think all black, that thing looks very nice :)

Yup, it's because it's a GLT.

I just don't have any 'need' for it. There's a limit to how many cars you can actually use, and I'm waaay past that point already....5 at present sm56

Let it in one piece!
I think the 300 build from the end of 1983 till 1985
has the best look! It has a bit from the MK I and
this nice bumpers.
Don´t scrap that car.

Where do you get all those good cars from? :o

Do the engine mounts & brakes, put a fresh MOT on and sell it on for a good price perhaps. But don't break it, pleeeeease ... Mk2 GLTs are really special.

Hmm, too much hassle to make it mint and original therefore it needs to be a project car.

B280E or B5254F anyone?

That's a lovely car - don't break it please!

That being said - you're never going to make your money back on restoring it. So go with Steve's suggestion, make it beautiful and ditch the loch nessy monster!
