What kind of ICE you have?

The speakers will make it sound a lot better, but it won't be loud. My route originally when I didn't have the pennies was to mount the speakers I had well, as I could get speakers free, and wood free. Then, when cash allowed I chucked a new HU in.
So yeah, it'll sound a lot better, but not louder I'm afraid.

About 4x 10w in vaugely meaningful figures? A modern quality head unit will make 20-25w...possibly 30w (in the same terms).
Keep an eye on eBay. You'll snag a 5 year old Pioneer (or similar) unit for well under the price of a tank of fuel (£40-45 with a 10cd changer last time I was looking - didn't look at cd players alone)...and it'll kick the stock head unit into touch.
I'm afraid really good quality ICE does cost a bit (I've got probably 3-4x the value of the car invested in my system, and it's nothing special really
)...however you can work miracles for everyday use with a pair of 6x9s on the shelf, a pair of 5.25" components in the front doors, and a chunky head unit to drive them.
cheers
James

Hmm, all this talk about radios makes me think I should see about fixing ours sometime...
EDIT: looking back, I see Andy had the same problem, and him and Chris were looking into it. Did either of you guys find out what the problem was?
(FM starts very quiet, and crackly when the radio's turned on, then gradually get louder, so you have to keep turning the volume down every now and then for about five mins before it gets to the proper level without excess background noise. MW and LW work fine from the word go though.) I think it's a VC 608

Andy did manage to fix his old HU for a few weeks, then it went again I believe. Either that or he gave into the peer pressure and got a new HU, he has a pimp sounding system now
His old one was an old skool alpine though, so not sure if it would be the same problem.

The 80s Volvo ones were Philips designs, but most of the newer ones are/were Alpine....in case anyone cares

To the point that for 93/4/5 ish MY's they just put straight un rebranded Philips HU's in, like Rover did in the late 80's early 90's.

These aren't yet in the car but soon they are.
Pioneer DEH-P6900IB CD-player with build-in I-pod control
Peerless D.5 front speaker set with 5.25 two-way speakers and tweeters
DLS 960 6x9 rear speakers
Rainbow Amboss 10" subwoofer in 17 liter SPL Dynamics enclosure or whatever that box is called
Helix Dark Blue 5 amplifier
At the moment there is some issues how and where to mount ie. 5.25 front speakers place isn't the problem with these but how to get these fitted is a bit of a problem because they are "bit" bigger than the last one i took out. And that amplifier is also causing me a headache. Because there is not room to fit it. Only place where i can think of fitting it is under that parcel shelf (4-door sedan). But is that plastic thing strong enough to hold almost 8 kg amplifier with cableties of course. But if anyone has ideas where to fit that amplifier get in touch.

In my two cars one has the amp in the hatch recess (but thats a hatch) the other has it under the drivers seat, plenty of room under there!
You should be ok to mount 5.25" drivers with a 18mm ply ring, just don't do that with 6" drivers and manual windows...

I managed to fit that amp under parcel shelf to those rails which hold that shelf.Chris_C wrote:In my two cars one has the amp in the hatch recess (but thats a hatch) the other has it under the drivers seat, plenty of room under there!

I've decided to take the more "traditional" route and have gone and bought this lot:

80's-tastic 4x20 watt amp, along a matching radio cassette player. Don't snigger, it has a metal tape facility
erm ...
@Chris - sorry, I think we'd talked about me buying your Volvo amp at some point, but I just had to get this one! Boxed and unused for 10 Euros ...
