340 gearbox

Post by ajdubas »

Hello,

have recently acquired a beautiful mark 2 340 hatch, pics will be up soon, when my laptop returns from the butchers.

just a slight technical question, that somebody here might know the answer to:

Did the Mk 2 340 DL come in a 5 speed option?

Not AFAIK. However, it was standard on a Mk2 340 GL (1983 - 1985). May have been different on the UK market though ...

As far as I know, there were no changes to the 4 or 5 speed boxes over the generations of the 300 series, so any 4 speed gearbox should be easily swappable for a 5 speed one. Correct me if I'm wrong ;)

I believe you're right Martin - the 5th gear is an extension bolted onto the the original 4 speed - so should swap right over

Ok, so, provided I can get away with it and still rally it,
would swapping in a 5 speed including final drive from a 1.4 be a straight swap into my 4 speed 1.4?

How difficult is it to do?

oh... and does anyone have a 5 speed gearbox and/or diff from a 1.4?

Yes, you just swap the complete boxes over. You also need to swap the gearknob over, as there's a highly complex lock-out mechanism which cleverly fools the driver into thinking they can't engage 5th gear...

cheers
