Rust, rust and more rust

Post by Carl »

For the 2nd year in a row Fioner needs welding for the MoT

It's a dodgy issue as a lot of the MoT is down to personal opinion of the tester, and the rust could be seen as being ok or a fail. However because the car's going in for a DVLA inspection after the MoT (in order to retain the number plate) there can be no doubt so it needs to be done. If it wasn't done and the DVLA picked up on it (lets face it they're a PITA most of the time so it wouldn't surprise me if they were anal about it!) then the MoT tester (ie my Dad) would be in trouble. Bit annoying really!

However virtually everything else is fine - rear brakes need adjusting and that's hopefully about it.

At least the new owner's gonna get a solid car!!

Pants, that's really not good Carl. Where abouts is it? 300's seem to fester for so long unseen and look like a good car, then suddenly it can come through and you find all manner of things. I honestly thought Fioner was a good car, with merely the odd scabby bit on the top, where it had been scratched and festered and the usual on the tops of the doors.

It's like on the the scrap cars I had, when we took a very good looking wing off, we found the inner wing had practically gone, but from the outside you'd never have known. Scary really.

Hope it's all sorted Carl.

Do the DVLA really inspect the car to mot level ?

I don't see how they can as there staff are not qualified mot testers and the checks are normally done at your local dvla office which is obviously not equipped with testing equipment,

From my experience they just check the paper work and that the numbers on the V5 and mot match those on the car
( i.e chassis number , engine number and registration )

You're probably right Mick, and that's exactly what I said to Dad but he's not willing to take the risk, as the new MoT system is quite strict and even if it results in just an inspection at his station he'll get penalty points for it on his testers licence, which is not a good thing!

I'm not sure exactly where the rust is, somewhere at the rear is all I know. It'll be sorted, and it'll be done properly but unfortunately it means more delays :( Unfortunate as you say, but seems to be the 300's archilles heal!

I guess I could just take it to another MoT station who'll probably pass it, but at least I know the car will be solid when it comes to selling it which has gotta be a plus point!!

If the BX was ready to sell I'd be almost tempted to keep the 360 and sell that, but I've comitted myself now and have hopefully found a buyer anyway.
