Progress at last
IT'S ALIVE
And it sounds sweet as a nut.
Well celibrations over. First thanks again to Adam for guiding me through the last steps befor turnnig the key. Secondly we have one problem, as i was getting dark the last thing i was doing last night was reattach the clutch cable. All went well i thought untill i went to put the rubber cover on the bell housing i relised the clutch lever was not in the centre of the hole but resting against the bottom edge (missed due to having no light under the car). Adam had a look and something has broken inside the bell housing. So luckly the new engine had a bell attached which i used, but i still have the old one. So a bit more spannering befor it's back on the road.
Cheers

The car is now back together and all seems to be working and just in time (as in Sunday) as Monday was Gems birthday and i thought determined to have it done for then.
I have really enjoyed doing the job and i feel with what i have learnt in the last week and a half i now have a lot more confidence in working on the car, if not always putting things back together in the correct order
but i guess that will come with time.
The weekend was a bit interesting in the sense that after taking the bell bell housing off the old engine and checking the haynes it took me ages to get the bell off the new engine. It seemed to be free but would not pull free, then i found there was a plate on the front of bell behind the steering rack that i had completely missed and after a while of removing the bolts which was a pain in the arse all came apart fine. I did manage to follow that by putting the new bell on and doing the engine mounts only to forget to put the one end of the prop on so the engine mounts had to be taken off again.
The problem with the clutch was the spring clip thing that holds the clutch release arm on to the small ball pin. It had come off but wasn't broken.
The car is hopefully going in for a MOT this week and if we get the SORN documents back and sent back we will try and make it to the meet next weekend.
I'm also going to start stripping the old engine down this week as I'm dying to find out what seized it.
Cheers

Carl,
well done on the job so far. It is good to see someone who does not know a lot about mechanics doing such a big job themselfs and completing it properly. I'm sure you will have learnt a lot and now feel more confident in doing other major work to the car.
Well done

The old engine has now been striped and the part of the reason why it seized has been found. After i removed the crankshaft three of the piston conrods dropped and had free movement at the little end, but one didn't. It took a fair few belts with a hammer to move it enough to be able to slide the piston out, which came out fine once the conrod was in the right position. Looking at the little end the two holes which i think allow oil in to the gudgin pin look clear but if you look at the last photo you can see some metal sticking out of the side of piston which can't be good.

The car has gone for it's MOT, so fingers crossed it will pass.
When we drove it to the garage it did do one annoying thing, it overran when switched off but i hope that was due to the idle solenoid as the old engine was doing this and we used the carb off that one. Luckly the new engine came with a carb so i hope with a quick swap when it comes back it will be sorted.
Cheers
