240 4pots and carlton vented discs (again)
Guys, I was cleaning up my basement yesterday, and I had a look at a spare v340 strut I had lying there. Then it struck me that my toyota AE86 has exactly the same brakedisc mounting configuration, so I took one of the discs, and lo an behold, it's a direct fit! They are about the same diameter as the original volvo discs, but they're vented. Keeping the disc small allows you to mount smaller diameter wheels. Shame I bought non-vented 4-pot's a while ago...

Is this definite? If so what model and year etc vents should I look for? This would be ideal as the main factor in rallying is the heat, tbh the volvo does lock up quite well, just doesnt cool quickly in between junctions.
(also would these discs be a direct bolt on with the 240 4 pots aswell, as I have not seen how these fit)
Cheers
Jason

Well, I looked up the measurements, and I fear they are not suited to the 4-pots.. total diameter is 234mm as opposed to the stock 239 of the volvo.. so maybe only interesting if there are vented calipers that stay close to the original size. For those interested in the exact sizes, you can look them up on:

It's in dutch, but not difficult to navigate. The model is an #E8# corolla 83-87 GTi Coupe.
I've looked around there before, trying to find something that would work for my non-vented 240 calipers, but no luck so far.. Anyways, hope you guys find a model that will work with the huge girlings.

Because vented discs are thicker the std caliper will not work.

I really need to decide on a solution soon, as I have to go back to soton in a week or two, and hope to have brakes sorted. Had a look at them today and they definitely need a refresh!!!! so trying to decide what route to take. Anyone know where to get caliper rebuild kits from if the worst comes to the worst?
Cheers

Damn...I have a pair of reconditioned corolla calipers lying in a box behind me here, but I disposed of the spare strutcasing I had in the basement so I cant find out anytime soon.
IMHO, I like the stock volvo system better than the brakes on my corolla, but there is a difference in the level of care put in both cars brake systems.

If the brakes on our Trueno were anything to go by (which feel in excellent condition) then the std Volvo system is a lot better. Nice communicative and progressive feel to the brakes.. Corolla calipers would be a downgrade imho.
Then again, I really like the upgraded stock Volvo system and didn't experience any of the horror-stories that are so popular here..

Dai, at least one vented disc fits in standard calipers, I owned it! Once again, I wish I knew what I do now and could have pulled it!
