Not Volvo - Veg Oil fuel

Post by SoLaMaNdA »

Hello all, I've not posted on here much since selling my 360 but thought some on here might be interested in my latest project.

I needed a vehicle that could carry a decent load, 3 people and not cost too much. After some research I worked out it was worth forking out for a half decent van (don't laugh, it's a ford transit) and run it on veg oil! It will pay for itself in no time...

I ran it with a varied mix of cooking oil and diesel for 4k miles over the summer with great performance.

Last week I converted it to run on 100% veg oil. It now has a second 22L tank fitted that contains standard diesel. It starts on diesel and the system is cleared of veg oil before parking up with the diesel. Once warm, a heat exchanger warms the fuel using the engine coolant. A couple fuel valves and switches control the system.

I hope this might give some the courage to do this on any other cars they own or future vehicles :)

Careful with 205s. If you've got a Lucas diesel pump they don't like veg oil at all without a heater, and you might end up snapping the pump shaft. However the Bosch pump should run fine without a heater (so less complicated and less initial expense) on a 50/50 mix. Guess who researched it for his girlfriends 205 ;)

BTW, good work on a Transit. If I was doing a lot of mileage I'd definitely jump on the veg oil bandwagon now a lot of the red tape has been lifted!!

Veg oil is great!

I used run around in a Diesel 1.9 VW Polo, that ran on 50/50 mix in the winter and 80/20 in the summer without any modifications.

At 1/2 the price of diesel it would be silly not too, as mentioned above just check which fuel pump and injectors you have before trying it. I know a lot of the more moden common rail diesel engines wont start when there is anything other than pure diesel in the system.
