Sorry I did not get back sooner, but after all the suggestions and advice I thought at least I should update anyone interested.
I decided to enlist the help of a "friendly" garage where the car has been serviced for the last 10 years.
They said if I got the car out of the garage on to the road , they would collect it on a trailer and sort it out!
I started the car with a view to get it as far as I could on the choke , and low and behold! it ran perfectly!!!!
I drove to the garage, they serviced and MOT'ed it, but could not correct a problem that did not occur when they had it.
I drove home. no problem (the long way! 30mls+). The car has been in the garage for the last two weeks (this might well be the cause of the problems), and I just hope it runs when I get it out next week.
Thanks for all your suggestions and I will be back if problems occur again!
p.s. Due to the nature of my work etc. the car does spend time in the garage, in the past I have only started it when I intended to run it for at least 20mls, would I be better at least starting it every week?
Mike.

Hi Mike glad the car is sorted , nice to know there is another Redline left on the planet,(dont feel so lonely now ) Its always best to start a car regularly whether using it or not , if nothing else to keep the battery charged. keep the old girl going , what colour is it and is that mileage genuine I thought mine was reasonable at 105.000 yours is amazingly low

I've had similar problems to this, and have often been helped by replacing the fuel filter---I'm not convinced this makes logical sense, but certainly made things better. My volvo needs a new one ~once a year (I really don't want to know what's in the fuel tank....), as well as seeming to fix your problems, it also starts better. With an old fuel filter I find when cold the car starts, but after a second the engine dies. Try again and it's fine.
It might not be the solution, but it is very cheap and quick to do. I'm certainly don't know as much about cars as most of the regulars here, so don't take my advice over theirs! After much problems ~10 years ago, the volvo was taken to a local renault garage (it's a renault engine after all). Can't remember what he did to it, but it works, and I don't even think about touching it....

The car is black and the mileage is genuine, I have had the car since new. Company cars mean it is the last car I actualy bought myself. For interest I had electric front windows and rear speakers fitted from new before I collected the car, I have it serviced once a year and try to take it out every few weeks. I never start it unless I get it out to drive 20+ miles.
The only replacement parts that are not "genuine" are the stainless steel exhaust (1st one) and the battery (3rd one). It has had no body repairs,.

Sounds like a very nice example. Don't mention genuine Volvo batteries...long running joke!
I'd second (or third) the advice to start at least once a week.
cheers

Hello ,newbie here!
got the same prob with my 340 (3 door g reg).I can go for 20 odd miles with no probs.Come home,go out a couple of hours later and it "chugs"and sometimes stops at junctions.Get it home,it ticks over ok(sometimes).1st thought ,idle solenoid but disconnecting it does stop the engine.Got new distributer, plugs, leads, changed or checked all fuel lines, changed inline fuel filterand gave the engine a dose of engine clean.Plug residue right colour.Replaced manifold gasket(easy way to check for a leak here is to use washing up liquid round the join),stripped carb (had 3 so used the best bits),put it all back together but still had the same problem.Even on long journeys it will die down,i pull up,and it will tick over and run ok.done the wd 40 test as well.Would checking the tappets do anything to help?Sorry its a bit long!

The only adjustments I know on the car is the screw for the throttle cable and the screw just under the idol solenoid are there any more?

yeah, but try twisting it a bit more.. if you did that adjustment when the engine wasnt fully warm it will be running too rich
