My Volvo 360 2.3 with Bodykit and HÖR suspension.

Post by bodejodel » 27 Aug 2008 08:20 pm

It took a while, but the car is mine!

Volvo 360 GLT
2.3L engine.
Power steering
Bodykit
Lowered and stiffer suspension
GLT interior with cig-holes
Faded red paint
Lots of rust

On the 3rd of august the seller would drive from Berlin to Holland to drop off the car at the storage location. And he did!

Unfortunately, the engine broke down when he was near Dortmund, still 150 km from the destination.
He called me and asked what I wanted to do. Did I want the car for cheapz or did I want my money back? Well... that was easy, bring me the car!
Luckily his grandma lives in Dortmund and his whole family was with him in their Audi A6 to pay her a visit. They rented a trailer (on sunday! (€€€!))and drove the car to me.

Image

After the car was mine, we checked what could have happened to the engine. It would not start. The starter was powerful enough to give the engine a good jerk, but the engine only did *KLUNK*. Something was blocked.

Image

My friend (Wouter, AKA Antiekeradio) opened the oil filler cap and said "I know what it is!"

Image
What’s that? :?

Image
That looks like…

Image
A valve fillerplate!
The nr. 1 intake valve has a broken valvespring. The *KLUNK* was the piston smashing the valve against the head…
I hope nothing’s really damaged inside apart from the valve. A new valve and valvespring will bring it back to life. If not, in goes a B234F or maybe even a Turbo. Someone here in Holland has just fitted a B204GT in his 360, so I’m inspired! :D

The car obviously needs some TLC before it will look the part, but I’m happy for now.
Some of my Volvo-friends have some nice parts ready for me to pick up and another one is willing to do the much needed welding.

To Do List:
Welding on all 4 wheelarches, and / or replacing front wings
Welding on both sills
Welding or replacing the doors
Welding on the right rear quarterpanel
Fixing the cracked bodykit parts
POLISHING the h*** out of the paint!
etc...

Parts to be fitted:
A snowcap (no 300 can do without!)
Powered windows
Descent rear muffler (the stock one looks hiddeous IMO)
Descent size rims
Bigger brakes front and rear (I read Adam is working on that)
Bigger engine!
etc...

It will be a slow process since I don’t have a lot of time, but it will get there…

I've got the moulds for the bodykit from the group buy, which when I find some time I will make one or two limited kits. A couple of people are on the list already who have asked nicely and shown an interest!

Good work Jeroen, glad it's being saved, it looks to be a bit of work, but it will be worth it! Keep us updated!

Glad you are back with us Jeroen, you know she'll look good with some work! You'll have to build up snowcap supplies again, else we'll have to ship them back :D

I could not live without a 360! It made me feel incomplete!
It was impossible for me not to buy this one. It will need a LOT of work before it looks good. Maybe, if the rust is really bad, I will try to find a better GLT to swap the special parts on to, but I love the red, so welding is my no. 1 choice.

I already have a snowcap, so you won't have to start shipping them back to Holland yet!

(got any rear window louvres yet?)

I'd be tempted to reshell that thing, surely there will be other red GLT's in better condition bodywork wise? Unless you can get the work done cheaply the cost of bodywork usually is insane.

Some very nice parts, though! Out of interest what injection system is it running? Is looks just like LU-Jet used on the B200F, wonder if its specifically mapped for the 2.3?

Would be cool to keep them stripes, they suit it pretty well!

The bodywork will be done cheaply by a V3C member, but it will still be expensive due to the vast amount of work.
If I would transplant all the bits on to another car I will only make sure it is a GLT for the interior wich is in a pretty sad state at the moment. The color of the car doesn't matter to me. I will have to repaint the bodykit after the repairs anyway.
I love red, but I not on my bank account...

We could not see the engine type because the valve cover was leaking badly and there was oil all over the place.
The MAF is still the old 360 one but according to the seller it has been adapted for the bigger engine. The head and exhaust should have been flowed and matched. Also the computer has been remapped. The car has been owned by a Volvo dealer employee so there was some acces to technology to do all this.

If the engine is repairable I will try to find out what exactly has been done to the engine and the computer. I do not really trust all these mods so I'd rather put in an engine I know is original and mod it myself.
I now know a B204GT fits in a 360 so I might be tempted...

nice car, rust not terminal as far as I could see.

unfortunately, by now most "cheap" 360's are in this state or even worse.

in the long run, the best bet is to let Erik do the welding, and have it thoroughly ML-protected afterwards.

finding another shell that has less superficial rust, will only lead to more frustration in the end because there is bound to be hidden rust in those as well...

Jeroen, I swapped my GLT interior for a leather one last week, so I have a set of spare seats. The donor car is a non-smoker so there are no cig-holes and the trim is in good condition but the drivers' seat is a little saggy. Passenger side and the rear seats are good though.

Hi Tom, that would be nice!
You are from Bonn so it's a LHD car?

Can you hold on to it for a while? I need to spend some money on other areas of the car first...
If you can sell it before I can buy it you should do that. The interior is not my first priority ATM...

Yes it's a LHD car. Sure I can hold on to them for a while! Some time in the near future I'm going to have to have a parts clearout though, as I need to free up some funds to invest in my GLT (amongst other things I'll probably have to have the PAS steering rack overhauled :-()

Speaking of my GLT - V3C Erik: is he good as welding, and do you think he might want to take on another project ;-) ?

I have never seen him welding, but others say he is very good.
He is really optimistic so a car is never rotten enough to fix!
Because of that, he has LOTS of cars waiting for some heat...

If you want him to weld your car in the future, you'd better ask him soon he's always very busy...
I'll PM you his V3C Profile so you can contact him. I think you need to be logged on to see them...
