5gear Manual - Variomatic transmision swap

Post by maxwell » 07 Sep 2008 12:48 am

Hi,

I have a 5 gear manual transmision on my car, is it posible to buy in UK a variomatic and swap it with the manual gear box?

I have a 343 2.0i - 1987.

Thanx.

2 Liter engine does not match CVT.

it may work if you also put in the 1.4 engine.

lots of bobs and bits to bolt over, though...

lol

i have to ask... what is the point? surely theres some good reason or you just wouldnt bother

Imagine a powerful engine, and a nice sold propshaft, being joint to the back wheels by two rubber bands.. Did they DO a 2ltr variomatic? surely you'll just anhilate the rubber bands pretty much straight away

Well i have a plan in my head to build a prototype variomatic transmission with no bands. Just pure weels. It is a special variomatic with extreamly low losts. :D

Sorry , but i cant say more unless its patented in europe. sm36
Hopefully i get anuf money together, thats pretty expensive.

The think was to try the original variomatic, and than a modified prototype, to mesure the diferences between the old and the new.

The second problem, There is no 1,4 volvo 3xx in czech republic with variomatic. :(
I have a 343 2.0i and a 360 2.0k so i can modify one of that cars, no else one.

Maybe a 4xx variomatic could fit. I will contact friends here in CR.
But thanks for replys.

I can understand where you're coming from, a vario system for the 360 would be cool, but it would require a lot of work to adapt the 340 system to fit, and then it would be at risk of slipping or breaking. The vario system works so well for being ready to accelerate and go when in corners etc, but it does need the high revs at high speeds issue sorting! It'd be really interesting to know quite how the vario system was used and beefed up in the 343 rally car.

Are you sure the rally cross was vario!? I've thought a couple of times a lanes vario would be awesome, to the point of converting Fake, but... ;)

Thats why, no belts - no slipping, in the new variomatic. Shure, there can be problems. The new vario. has such a variabylity thah when you give full gas you could break the diff or you just burn down the wheels.

The acceleration should be great, and it should save gas, like every vario.

Yeah saving gas in a vario 340 isn't really an option! They are thirsty because of the higher revving all the time.

Chris, I've got a magazine cutting somewhere of the vario rally cross...... need to find it, scan it and post it sometime.

Ok, you hawe right, but the new vario should not have the losts like the old. There is no centrifugal force and no friction from the belts and such things.

I cant mesure the losts, becose i have only a simple working prototype that isn´t solid anuf to mesure it. I need to build a biger one, with bearings and steel case. Even i try it on a different vehicle. Maybe a tractor. That will by the fastest tractor ever, and wery powerfull in pulling too.

The factory 343 Turbo rally cross car most definately didn't have a vario.. ;) It had a Getrag gearbox from a Volvo 264 mated with a modified alu-case diff from the same car. (Transaxle setup was kept)

I've got a full article about the rally cross car included with interview of Pi Walfridson, it's in Finnish though but you can check the pics. :D

That pic above is from the Volvo museum in Gothenburg where the factory rally cross car currently is located.

Hmm, interesting, I didn't think the factory car got a vario system! I've found one of the articles, seems to be in french, of the same 343 turbo rally cross car as in your articles. I'll try and find the other one when I get chance.
