yep, the AVI signal has only recently been discontinued.

RDS-TMC is the name of the game these days :)

My mum's previous Golf (1999) had non-RDS radio with a "TA" function where you could listen to a tape and still get the traffic announcements when they came.

Is / was that the same as AVI?

TA is the most basic function of RDS

so there was some decoder in there, but a really basic one that did not support the text transmissions.

OK, I understand.

I have an old Volvo MTS radio at home which I haven't got around to testing yet, and another early 80s Volvo radio with a digital display that looks like a 70's petrol pump display, or an early clock radio.

I love old car stereos ;-)
