The easy conversion is the 2ltr 400 series engine as it is totaly bolt in.

i would say just a free flow exhaust and improved inlet (bike carbs webbers etc) would get the 100BHP no problems.

Does anyone rember the 180 BHP 2ltr engine on ebay?

The 180bhp was a formula renault, tweaked by Hill engineering. I'd love to know what it rev'd to, and how often it needed rebuilding ;)

I´ve just installed a 340 1.7 engine in a friends 345. The camshaft was replaced by a Renault 21 item (not sure wich model) that also was ran by a Solex Carb and Renix ignition.

I should have brought the Renix system from this car but I didnt realised at the time that the camshaft would be diferent from the Volvo one...

By what I read, carburetted 1,7 Renault 21 engines had 3 guises: 76bhp, 88bhp and 90bhp. The cam we installed was peaker so I guess it's from one of the 2 later engines.

I plan to fit bike carbs and a bigger bore exhaust manifold to this engine and I was hoping that the engine would respond well to these upgrades. What do you guys think?

I think that it would be good to change ignition to something better then, proper ignition timing helps lot with power and behaviour of engine.
Problem with Renix type of ignitions are that they work only to setup they were built, so if some parts are changed it will not be optimal.
I don't know if something like Fireball aftermarket ignition could be possible to fit into car?

I only know that when I had converted my car to fuel injection and K-cam it did run, but not very strong torque, but after I did replace ignition and tuned ignition map a bit, then it did start to pull lot stronger, however I did use Bosch -139 module and Megasquirt to make sparks, so I have no information about other aftermarket ignition systems.

In 1960-1970 car enthusiasts did build their own ignition systems here, it used optic sensors, but can't remember lot more about it.

I believe that even most basic distributor would be better than Renix as you could always tune springs and adjust ignition, but with Renix none is possible, except for that one crazy guy who did modify Renix to his middle engined beast, however that page is gone from internet and I had no enough brain to save it back then when I saw it.

with the 360 you can fit a dizzy from a 240 as a cheap way around renix. On the 1.7 that is not possible but perhaps some of the renualt versions of the engine used a conventional ignition system?
