foggyjames wrote:Surely Fake is your rally car, Chris? Slightly scruffy, and doesn't matter tooooo much if it gets bent...? This thing is a bit nice for rallying. I doubt it's going anywhere in a huge rush...
It is, and I've spent (or owe... depending on who you talk too ;)) a silly number of pennies on rally bits for it recently. I wouldn't rally a mk1, to start with I couldn't deal with 1.4 rallying again, let alone the other problems.

Once again I've got Spainter disease (something to do with these alloys and kit I think) and want a quicker car. Next week I'll want a more fun car again. I've been 2.5years now without a new car of anysort, and I'm really struggling not to buy something. Spending the money on Fake is making me focus on what I want from it, and should prove a bit more of a beast in the next few months.

On the other hand, that midget I drove has really got to me. The big alloys will be coming off soon but I need to work out the order of doing things. Stopping like I currently can is amazing, but I miss the feel, chuckability and looseness of smaller cheaper tyres.

The plan is when I get the 2 cars up and running properly again I'll be cured of wanting other things for a while, and want to just enjoy them again. I havn't had that grin round corners with these tyres at all, it's impossible to do anything but just go round the corner.

And I've kinda been looking at Sunbeams again. And 240sx's and 300zx's. And EvoIII's.

Do I have a clue what I want? No. Not at all  Who else can manage to have on the same want list a midget, sunbeam and an evo

MK1 PARTS

Post by MCHUDD » 26 Nov 2008 01:36 am

Hi Jay.
If James does not want your front spoiler,i would love it for mine. I would also be interested in a mk1 centre gauge panel.
Cheers Mark.

Knowing me, not a lot sm56

The blue 343 is due to have its bodywork sorted out early next year, so I better get my money's worth out of it after flashing the cash! This one will probably remain tucked away for some time.

cheers

Whehe, I know the problem you have!

I got 6 cars @ the moment. (343 '77, 343 '80, 340 GL '83 (+german 340 diesel, will become 1 car), 360 GLS '84 and an Amazone P121) And only 3 are completly road legal and driving...

Nice buy! My 1980 looks quite the same. In a really fabulus status. No spot of rust at all. But as allways: the nosecone was very bad (replaced allready) and also as allways: very little spots on the left door behind the mirror.

Say what? You need more power, not less grip!

Problem is with more power and more grip, you have the same fun at xx mph more. Which means a: you are over the speed limit, and b: you're more likely to get hurt.

I've sussed out in my mind what I want anyway, at least I've gone back to the thought process I've had for a while. Fake will be made into a horrible boring comp car, that is fast, turns corners (quick rack, maybe PAS, silly tyres) and more power.

Then, for the daily, I'll have a fun involving slow Kar, on not sure what tyres yet.

Bridgestone Potenza's RE720, disco'd but I'd guessing any similar Potenza will be the same.

I've got them in 195/50r15 on a 15x7 rim. Put it this way, first time I went out in them Jason was in the car and I was cadence braking until he pointed out they didn't need it. You CAN cook a 300's brakes with these, even T1-R's I couldn't do that with. They stick to every corner, and the rears won't release until the rain, when they work like a mini slipper, both spin up even though I still havn't fixed my suspension.

For safety they make an awesome road tyre. However, the 340 has lost it's perfect 70's ikkle car like handling (the thing I keep prattling on about 340s vs 360s and everyone thinks I'm mad). It's now just like a... well, dunno really, it's a weird feeling not finding the limit at any point. The last few autosolo type things I've done I can't get anywheel to break out.

Tyre details noted.
You're right about cars being more entertaining on cack rubber, hence I run colway remoulds on the back of my 40. And yeah 340s are lots more chuckable than 360s for some reason.

Instead of shoddy rubber how about stiffening up the back end to silly amounts? Less grip + more sideways = more fun

Yeah, it was a thought Aaron. I'm going to see how it handles with good suspension at least, but I've a feeling I'll have a fun 300 and a fast 300 in the end.

It's been pressing on my mind for a while the turbo isn't going to be the fast one...

I'm vaguely aiming for something similar - the 343 (GLS R-Sport) will be the slow(er) but fun car, while the 360 Turbo will be faster, but more 'sensible'...

cheers

I just realised that first picture kinda sucks...

The nose-cone is a write-off...

But the rest of it is ok! :) The rot on the wheelarch there is only surface. There are a few bits here and there which need attention, but in general it's very, very nice.
