hi all,
is there many options for box and diff ratios available? to fit a 1.4 engine that is.
im only intrested in 2nd gear in the box.
and how much of a job is it to change diffs within the box? can you mix and match to get different overall raios?

Re: gearbox and diff ratios?
Custom fabrication may be your only way.
M45 4 speed is basis of m47r 5 speed which has tail extension to house o/drive 5th gear.
M series gearboxes were used in various other Volvos but whether the gears will be interchangeable is debatable.
Perhaps one of the more knowledgable members will know for sure but it sure ain't a Henry where you can mate a type 9 to just about owt
Diffs you have the massive choice of 3.82 (1.4)
3.64 (1.7/2.0)
3.45 (various older models)
3.27( stored under the hen's teeth)
Our kids got a 4.78,special import from Sweden and not cheap. If the limmy fitted we'd be using it but the CWP is too small so we got an expensive shiny paperweight

5 speed 1.4 litre models 3.82:1

1.7 litre models and GLE 3.45:1
2 litre* carb models 3.27:1

The gearbox ratios are the same for all configurations, except some havea 5th. No mention of diesel.

Re: gearbox and diff ratios?
ah ha, thats pretty helpfull! thanks guys!that choice of diffs should be enough to keep me quiet for a while! if it difficult/possible to change just the diffs within the box? like put a 1.4 diff into a 1.7 box etc etc?

Re: gearbox and diff ratios?
I've got a 1700 box with a 3.64 attached. The diffs are totally interchangeable as far as I know, reckon they're all identical in terms of casing. It's seperate to the box, bolted on the back so not too hard to swap, though it's easier to do the whole transaxle IMO.

Re: gearbox and diff ratios?
7K should give close to 155mph, by my satnav calculations. I went with the 3.82 in mine, calculated 20.9 mph per 1000rpm, so 146.3 @7k, plenty really.
