1.8 16v problems.
1.8 16v problems.
right.
car has worked fine.
recently its been screaming on start up using volvo starters but would always fire up with out a problem after a while.
So every one said get a renault starter motor, so ive just been and got one. well it doesnt work, the same problem still occurs!
it just sits and screams the minute you turn the key.
now i'd say ive got a fly wheel problem for definite? Anyone got any other ideas before i sell up

Re: 1.8 16v problems.
Shouldn't be any need to grind it out, You should be able to collapse it using a Lump hammer and a small punch, I managed to get one out of a starter that way.
As Dai said, Its either alignment or the teeth on the flywheel, I managed to kill my first flywheel with a starter that had munched teeth, Simular sort of thing it ran and started fine on many occasion then it just stoped, just made a load of noise without even turning the engine.

Stick with it man, lets hear no more of this 'selling up' talk. Mine is mega close to running, had it barking up with the help of some bradex easy start juice. A bit of work to do yet though. Just focus on the end result!

Re: 1.8 16v problems.
i do stick with it. the other day it would have gone to MOT, but then the starting problems started. so it goes no where.
Ive had it driving round the block and everything, - lots of money have gone in to the car, i wont see it back if i sell it and well i wont see the fun it gives me ever again if i do, but it really does get to me.
Ive just woken up so i'll be out there in a minute making a space to get near enough to strip parts again!

Re: 1.8 16v problems.
flywheel with out bell housing removed:

looks fine to me?
ive removed the dowel now aswell but the battery has gone flat so its back on charge.

Re: 1.8 16v problems.
right no start still with out the dowel.
ive spun the flywheel arround its, still quite stiff from when it was all rebuilt but turns freely like it should.
i dont want to take the bell housing off really but it looks like im going to have to and if needs be the 1.7 flywheel from the volvo engine i have will have to go on.
unless anyone has any ideas.

Re: 1.8 16v problems.
I spy copper filings, the starter you are trying has too many teeth, its eating the bush in the end.

Re: 1.8 16v problems.
right, so is it worth looking at yet another starter?
how is the teeth number significant?

Re: 1.8 16v problems.
Wrong number of teeth will kill parts fairly quickly.
I had a Clio starter motor on my R5GTT (fitted by the previous owner) but they have a tooth less than the 5 one so it chewed up the cog on the starter and chipped the tips of some of the flywheel teeth
Made the same noise you are describing aswell so thats more than likely your problem.
