340 F7P 16v unanswered questions!

Post by benlewismav »

Hello all, 1st post. I'm doing a Clio 1.8 16v engine on Yamaha R1 carbs into a 340 1.7 conversion. Have been looking around on the forums for a while trying to find as much as I could, just had a few questions about the conversion I still couldnt find answers to.

1) When removing the P/S pump from the 1.8 16v block what belt (shorter -from the crank to the water pump) do you need to use/where do you get one?

2) What radiators are you guys using on the 1.8 16v engines? The 1.7 volvo radiator in the car has developed a nasty leak so I cant use that, I do have a mk1 clio 1.2 radiator that I was going to replace it with until I noticed that the coolant inlet and exit pipes are on the same side (where as the volvo rad enters one side and exits the other) -although this may not be such a problem on the conversion? I figure I'm going to have to do some custom bodgery on the plumbing anyway..

3) As i'm going to be using R1 carbs do I need to keep any of the old Renault loom? I couldnt find much information on the wiring side of things?

4) With regards to ignition, I take it the volvo coil is used? and then hooked up to the renault dizzy? Where is the pickup/firing signal taken from? (e.g. crank angle sensor, trigger wheel etc?)

5) If I will be using the volvo ign., will I need any of the volvo loom?

Thanks, any help is appreciated, I am taking photos so a progress thread will follow shortly! (just finished respray, wide arches on the way! ;);) )

You need a six grove belt thats about 825mm long. One from a Renault sport spider will work. (I actually used a Halfords off the shelf 4 grove 813mm belt)
I've just replaced the original 1.4 rad for the 1.7 rad which is thicker. Also I had a spare 1.7 rad and the 1.4 was leaking! Either way a bit of pipe bodgery will be required.
3) As i'm going to be using R1 carbs do I need to keep any of the old Renault loom? I couldnt find much information on the wiring side of things?
As far as I know, you wont need much if any of it - Just for gauge sensors etc. Best to check with others before you throw it away mind as I'm taking the EFI route.
4) With regards to ignition, I take it the volvo coil is used? and then hooked up to the renault dizzy? Where is the pickup/firing signal taken from? (e.g. crank angle sensor, trigger wheel etc?)
I think you'll need to use the 1.7 renix as this has vaccum ignition advance. Again I don't know from experiance
5) If I will be using the volvo ign., will I need any of the volvo loom?
I'd guess so, though theres not much for a volvo loom!

If you are going carb route its realy easy, the 1.7 flywheel sensor with 1.7 renix unit is already wired into the volvo loom so will work fine.
A 1.7 rad will cool fine. you will need to ransfer the water temp sensor from the volvo engine into the stat housing from the renault., the oil pressure switch on the renault block will work fine on the volvop wiring if you make a spade to spade adapter otherwise just take the sensor the volvo block.
Belt wise i run a 6pk818 which is perfect when running the volvo alternator brackets with the renault alternator.

belt wise im using a volvo 440 2ltr non PAS belt, but had to take it back and get the next one which is a -20mm difference which i found a much better fit.

radiator, im using my 1.4 one and have had no problems what so ever yet on spirited drives etc - but then im running no heater matrix,( wont afect it much)

its renault crank postion sensor to renault renix unit for EFI or from what ive found so far volvo CPS to volvo renix for carb.

dont even touch the volvo loom - keep it as it is as its all used as it contains take offs for alternator- starter- lights- oil presure sender - temp sender - rad controls etc.
