I am unsure how to find out which order the injector plugs should be in on the loom too. :/ It has two longer wires and two shorter ones. Short ones for numbers 2 and 3 perchance?

Does not matter what order they are plugged in as they fire full group. All injectors fire at the same time.

Here's a belated update lol


As previously mentioned, it was spraying oil out of the return for the turbo, so I whipped it off and replaced the gasket and O ring with OEM Volvo parts, expecting this to solve the issue.

The gasket isn't correct. Despite Volvo using the 940's chassis number to order it:


See how much of the old one was left lol.

The DIY return

Here's the less than adequate space/view you have to work with if you don't remove the mount. I managed to remove the return, but fitting it again this way was impossible.


Despite the incorrect fitment, I stuck it on anyway. Removal/fitting required the radiator out, alternator off and O/S engine mount.
It seemed to have worked initially, no drips when running. It has now started dripping (Noticed on Saturday night. First offcial run out) although nowhere near the previous extent.

So there's still a few things to address. On Friday evening after a couple of hours on it I thought it was ready to go. So at about 3am my mate and I went to Tesco for oil, it was only on the return trip we noticed the lights dimming, wipers slowing etc. Luckily we made it home (15 miles or so on just the battery FTW). It was like Apollo 13 Blower off, engine fans off. Reduce the amperage for re-entry etc. /gay. LOL

Lesson learned there, multimeter the battery when the car is running. Had I done this initially I would have realised it wasn't charging. This was down to the wire to the dash light not being connected, which actually plugs into the voltage regulator on the alternator lol. I dodn't/didn't know much about alternators but we sorted that.

As can be seen, I have no FMIC atm. Just a cheeky scrapyard bypass until my eBay core arrives.


I still have a few gauges to connect, exhaust brackets to make, the damn oil return again and the FMIC to sort and the water cooling to the turbo housing to reconnect. Did the flow hose come from the 940 header tank? Also I am still running a GLT injection pump. It doesn't seem to cut until fairly high up the rev range in 5th. So it's more than adequate to get someone going. I CBA to fit my uprated pump ATM as it needs a fancy connector.


Despite the superheated air and limited boost/power. It still pulls very well. I have whooped a couple of modern diesels a new Saab Turbo and was level pegging with some form of BMW X5. (before i slowed so I didn't lose the louvre lol) Mostly just to see where I'm at more than anything. It will be good to see what's to come when I have a FMIC and bleed valve with the engine running around 11 psi.

Here's my help post on TurboDICKS (they aren''t very helpful unless you're in the clique it would seem). This details my current woes!

I have just ordered a banjo fitting to run the uprated pump, and checked the timing marks - they line up.

Any more ideas? To say these parts have cost me a few quid is an understatement! It's nto all bad though, as 80% are service parts, and the other stuff doesn't last forever anyway.

Id have a look at the MAFM and do a compression check as you say...

I believe that you can unplug the MAFM and the engine should still run properly ish.

If the timing belt arrives I may be fitting that and the fuel pump, then if my problem is sorted, a GTS Chris dawes device and boost gauge - the fun bits. lol

You might be better on volvoforums.org, its just a standard 940 LPT Turbo. Hey I thought it was the FT you had put in, you will be well impressed with 11psi then!

Anyway, its not a common problem with these engines so there will not be a flood of responses knowing exactly what the problem is. Just follow your best problem solving instincts..which you seem to be doing..check everything.

From your description it sounds most like a weak spark to me. Are your leads leaking onto the cramped chassis or something? Look at it in complete darkness once you eyes have gotten used to the dark. I would say to remove the disty cap and check it for oil, but can you do that without lifting the engine or vent box? Might be better to go for the relocate now.

The ODB is not EODB or ODB2, best to make up a flashy reader (as standard in the 95 940);
