May this be something to do with the VAT rate on the job? Last time I had work done on a head (no parts required, just machining/pressure test and the like) I noticed that it came in under the reduced rate of 13.5%, not the standard rate.
Yes, services rate is much lower, for example, if I sell you a headlight it will have 23% vat applied as a sale of goods but if you ask the service department to get you the headlight, (from me) it will incur only 13.5%.

I was quoted €50 to hone the bores if I bring a bare block, €50 to skim a flywheel, €20 to ultrasonically clean injectors. I expected much higher costs.

@ride on.

I appreciate what you are saying. If I had a service history with this engine I would be likely to leave it alone but it is a bit of a lucky dip. The guy i am dealing with seems honest and i trust him from talking to him but I just won't take the risk of popping it in without a thorough inspection. I expect after 100,000 miles and 25 years it will have some issues and will of course have wear. I don't want to have to take the car off the road in the future so the big jobs, (crank shells, rings etc) will be done now for peace of mind. I am lucky that I can pick the brains of the mechanics at work, an engine is an engine and we have BMW, Ford and Toyota master technicians at work who are rebuilding them on a daily basis. We also have a sister dealership that has volvo. So I won't be stuck doing this but i reckon I'll do OK following the haynes.

Got a layer of topcoat on the subframe last night. Sick of paint! Same again each night till the weekend. Then it will be under the car for prep before fitting all this back together.

That's nuts. :D I can understand the service bit, but not the physical goods bit. (Don't let the EU Commission hear about that. They've bollocked many countries for much lesser oddball interpretations of VAT.)

OK, here is what €160 got me.

This is going on the back burner for now while I get the car on the road. Subframe is painted, now to get under the car with a pressure washer and sand a few bits of surface rust, then underseal and get it all back on the car. Was hoping to have it done this weekend but life/wife got in the way.

I am opening a new thread in the engine section and will move this over to the project car section as it will no longer be standard when I go for the engine swap but for now I will be driving on the B19a so will remain here till the engine is rebuilt.

Engine thread here if anyone wants to pop in and help me out.

Bloody idiot I am sometimes. I put the old wheel bearings in a plastic bag when I removed them and later tossed them out as I was fitting new ones. Unfortunately the thrust washers were in there too. Hopefully these are still available from the dealer.

Underside of the car is cleaned, ready for underseal. Was about to start yesterday but the rain came. Hope to get it done today.

I have the front suspension back on the car. Just missing a bolt from caliper to brake guard, 4 wheel nuts need replacing and my new wheel bearing stake nuts are useless so I have to find a solution. Seems to be some play in the drivers side I have to investigate further but looking good at the moment.

Now she is back on the front wheels I have the rear off. Time to see how my old deox c bath works on this lot.

Deox c will not help here. The sill is worse than I thought, might need a little work here I imagine!

Anyone know where I can source some rear radial arm bushings?

rear radius arm bushes NLA as far as i know.

As for the stake nuts, sand the bottom of the nut down, making sure its flat. won't need much and it'll tighten to a different place allowing you to stake it again :)

That's the part. Not sure what they call it, there are bushings either end. 1 is pretty soft. There is an eccentric bolt in the end of it.

I did a post on a rose jointed version, but it won`t be very refined and might add alot of noise. Yours looks ok at the moment, just make sure it is adjusted ok.

The bushing in the last photo can be moved in all directions with little force, (just with fingers) I'm thinking to fill the gaps with silkaflex. This would stiffen it up?

I'm thinking this is intentionally so.
