I too was woried about the car being in primer but as it wont be a bare metal respray, only bare metal where rust has been found i figured that the car would also have the rust proofing of some of the old paint as an added plus. Also i dont think it will rust that easily as people sand down primer with "wet" wet and dry paper, so wouldnt that cause rust problems?
Think ill research the topic a bit more, before i roll a primered car.
Cheers Dan

Primer and filler for that matter is porous, the wet wet and dry is so the paper doesnt clog. Then the car needs baking ideally to get any moisture out of the primer, it wont do any major harm however if moisture has got into the primer it can come through the topcoat.

My mate has a large gas heater which looks like a jet engine

so hopefully that will be enough to remove any moisture. Mot should be this tuesday so fingers crossed it passes. still need to reasemble so fresh paint will have to wait till after retro rides
Guess ill have to risk rolling in a primered car lol. worst case scenario ill have to do a bit more sanding and spraying after retro rides.
Cheers Dan

Ok today was a busy day, MOT is on tuesday so alot of welding took place followed by alot of sanding then a bit of fillering finally settling down with a lot of primering
The car is fully primered on the outside and thats how its gonna be until after retro rides. Not 100 percent finished yet, still a few patches which will need redoing where the dents are still visible. but its a start, and hopefully come tuesday ill be able to drive her again.
Will post pics up later on tonight as i really need a warm bath now

Dam, better delete some pics then lol.
Not too many pics as it was a pretty hectic day, but come monday when the car is hopefully all in one peice i will have loads of lovely piccies for you all.
First of all removal of the massive hole of rust on the wheel arch:
Will have pics of the other side on monday as mates welder ran out of mig wire lol
Rubbing strips removed from the sides of the car, along with all the badges, Very long and tedious work
because the paint is allready in very bad shape there wasnt much work needed to get it ready for spraying which was nice.
Time got on, so not many pics of the rest of the work just the final result:
The rear bumper got hit hard by primer so gonna have a go at cleaning it with thinners, if that doesnt work will get some plastic primer and spray it matt black.
Hope you all enjoy.

I spent ages trying to get it off but the bolts are really seized and eventually got the better of me for now, it will be removed fully after retro rides but as my mot is on tuesday and still have a few bits todo i decided to leave it on concentrate on other things.

Been learning how to use a spray gun which is fun, as for the booth ive just been spraying in the lock up, not ideal but quite a few cars have been sprayed in there before and they all looked good, including the orange e30 in the back ground. I think a lot of how good the paint job is relies on how much prep and inbetween coats work you do.
Hopefully she will be all painted and ready for the big v3m meet, if its still happening.

Aye, although I've done much at all in the way of painting, I've seen plenty of nice jobs done in fairly unsophisticated surroundings. I more meant how did you avoid painting everything else around!
cheers

Well todays mot test didnt go to plan

Two pages of mot fails and a retest booked for saturday morning

But i did meet the coolest mot tester in the world, showed loads of interest in the car telling me about different engines i should put in her and asking about what i had done, He also got me to help with the mot test, showing me along the way everything which was wrong, explaining why it was bad and then explaining to me how best to fix it.
Most of the fails were due to the fact all my rear lights stopped working on the way to the mot station, Yea he didnt believe me either
The rest was rust and more rust lol.
Anyways on with some nice pics.
And now some not nice pics.
Rust repairs along middle of sill and inside car behind drivers seat, they dont look neat but neat can wait untill the mot is passed
More rust along the front of the sill:
Rust cut out waiting fresh metal:
Will update with more tomo,
Fingers crossed shell pass on saturday.
