If you can weld it's not hassle.

Have a squint under the car, and you'll see a bracket on the rear seat belt strentheny plate that takes the 2 rear handbrake cables. You need to make that cable bracket appear 4" further away, and use a 1.7 front cable and the rear cables from a 360 (doesn't matter if you have a left/right or two lefts or two rights for the rear cables, they are just different lengths)

Other than that it's a bolt in and out thing so may well be worth it for you. I find having a non 340 handbrake alone useful, my car no longer tries to run away down hills...

Haha. :P I don't think my handbrake was too incredible either. I can understand that Volvo did not expect the 340 to have revvy 16v's in them 30 years later, but they could have at least given them brakes which could stop/hold their own weight. :D

I shall take a peek under mine today as I have to go to the unit anyway. I need to change the diff and box for those from a 1.7 so may be worth taking the whole rear end apart at the same time. I'm guessing it doesn't have a subframe with it all on I could just remove?

Haha. I thought so. :P I didn't take a look. Gonna see how front discs and pads go and go from there. It's hopefully going to the 'ring this year so gonna have to be at least kinda decent. :P
