Brilliant, that's the bunny. It turns out that my original idle-solenoid was definitely knackered after all (apart from the fact that I foolishly cut the pin off it).

The secondhand one I got proves to be working ok when tested directly on a 12v battery although the jet gradually works its way out of the body a bit (which I guess is normal when its not screwed into the carburettor?)

The reason my car had been running so badly is because of several factors: My original idle-solenoid had packed up. The hose on my servo was perished. The t-nipple between my air-filter pan and valve-cover was split. The fuel hose that comes off my carb was slightly split and weeping.

Also, before fitting the secondhand idle-solenoid I had swapped the ventilation hose for a shorter replacement piece that I re-routed around the right hand side of the carb in order to be able to access the mixture screw a bit easier. Thankfully I kept the original pipe which I later discovered contains a one-way breather valve. I was lucky enough to diagnose this obvious mistake (if you're in the know) with the help of a guy called Kevin who used to work for a local volvo dealership back in the 1980's. Once everything was in place and as it should be he tuned my carb and £30 lighter in my wallet my cars back to its good old self and running like a dream...

Glad to hear you're finally sorted on this. Sometimes you have to step back and realise when you're out of your depth and get an expert in.

Mate, Im always out of my depth regarding working on cars! Kev was able to tune my carb completely by ear, I'd give my right bollock to be able to do that! Lol

The bloke who does any serious work on mine can also do it by ear.
He can also tell how many revs per min it doing without looking at the clocks

Amazing gift eh? My car doesnt have a rev counter on the dash sadly...

Your car will be wired for one. Just a matter of taking the clock out
and putting a rev counter in its place.
