Having lived in Birmingham from the age of 7 to 18 (and on and off since) I have to say that the longer I'm away from it, the more I miss it. Not many people would think of Devon as a crap place to live but if, like me, you enjoy your cultural entertainments such as going to gigs and seeing decent films, Devon is actually very crap indeed. What makes it worse is that Devon is a long way from nearly everywhere else. If nothing else, Birmingham's biggest selling point (and once you're used to it anywhere else is very frustrating) is that it's easy to get away from (and back to). You can reach London, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Oxford, Cambridge, Southampton, Bristol, Exeter, Nottingham, York and even Milton Keynes in less than three hours by car.

So far I've lived in Cambridge, Bath, Birmingham, Leeds, Oxford, Plymouth and Exeter. Birmingham is by far my favourite city.

Oh and Volvo 164s, yes very nice indeed (back to the original topic)

It is particularly amusing given that you can virtually hop over the fence from Rupert's (admittedly very nice area) and be in a chavvy council estate.

I'll not have a bad word said about Devon...but then I suppose I'm probably the kind of person who likes the things it has to offer. It is a long way away from anywhere though, I'll give you that!

I'll second the 'far away from everyone' comment about Devon. Admitadly ebdl has experience of Plymouth, which, truth be told, isn't the finest part of our county. Mid Devon is a very nice place, although I'm not trying to find gigs as ebdl is, so the lack of such things isn't a big deal. Powderham castle (between Exeter and Exemouth) has done a few gigs in the past year or two, Elton John was there at one time.

Stuntman will agree that this is a very nice place.

You can't argue that Birmingham isn't central, very good comment, and I'm sure puplic transport is better than Devon, but when you have a car, getting arround Devon's fine, bar narrow lanes, which are at least picturesc. The sound of brambles scraping down the side of the car hurt me like nails down a blackboard seem to affect everyone else

Yes, Devon (excluding most of Plymouth) is lovely. If I had more money and free time I might appreciate being able to go surfing and walking on the moors and the like. I definitely miss the cultural diversity down here though - I don't think there are many other areas of the country where out of the approx 100 patients I've seen in the hospital this academic year, only 1 would not be white. Cornwall is even worse, and I've got to live in Truro in my final year - so far from anywhere else! I suppose I should appreciate the beaches, warm weather and countryside. Can't wait to get back to civilisation though

EDIT - yes I lived in Exeter for the past 2 years and it's a nice city (even if all the clubs are closed by 1am) and does get a few decent bands at the Uni.

I'm thinking of proposing a publicity campaign for Birmingham along the lines of "Birmingham: convenient for everywhere else." I reckon the council would love it.

Sure I get protective and park at the far ends of car parks, try to avoid going out in road salt and trying to keep milage down it gets used

I believe it was 20k back in 99 or whenever we started using it, it hit 28k at the taunton meet in the summer and I havn't a clue where it is now.

My uncle lives in the country and going the lane near him had horrid brambles we had to pass a few times, then I got my mum to get out the next time we went and chop 'em off before I drove though
