thats a good point
do you know much about them ? cause i am a bit worried about the vacuum thingy on there ,i think its been messed with at some point and taken out and put back but as far as i know vacuum box is a sealed unit and should not be taken out as it will break the vacuum seal ,right???
also any idea if the volvo 340 1.7 renix unit would be comaptible with renault 9 ??? i am askin this cause volvo 340 produces 80bhp while renault 9 does 92 not sure if ignition comp affects power output ????

Fake now runs silky smooth!
I'd never done a carb, but it didn't matter as I was still only keeping it for parts at the time. I just put the carb on some newspaper, and just used some methodical ideas as to which screws to take out when, and made sure that there were no bits left on the news paper at the end of it!
I'm dubious that a Volvo renix will fit your 9, there are so many different renixs for 300's, let along your 9 which seems like it must be running a different cam, as well as renix, to get the more useful power.

Not to mention probably a slightly differently jetted carb.

Volvo Renix probably will have different ignition map and thus will not very good option as probably engine would not run as well then.
I have bad experiences from my renix, it was basicly working ok, but when I switched to new ignition car did wake up and this is with same ignition map as renix had, of course I have tuned it now a bit further, but even at beginning it was much better. Car started much easier and there was ton of extra power to low rpm. Maybe there was fault in renix unit but if there was it was just that vacuum advance did not work or/and coil was old and gave weak spark.
When I looked spark with oscilloscope there was quite lot of variation in spark strength and shape at idle, I have not looked it now so Nothing to compare to, but maybe tomorrow, if I do have energy. It is quite easy to check, just need to make now one jumpwire and then connect coil negative to laptop with special wire... I'm just feeling bit lazy again

this the one on the r9 ,not that i am hoping the part numbers to be same on the volvo or anything
i did not know you could tune the ignition units ??? are there garages that specialise with that stuff ???

Well, you can't tune Renix. I have DIY programmable engine management called Megasquirt and just recently I switched Renix out from car.
I try to remember to pickup renix in a moment when I unload car

It is not very clean, my battery leaks white/blue stuff all over and specially to where renix was. Soon getting new battery, hopefully

you seem to know a lot about these mate, can you help me on this please??
i took this ignition computer out the other day and saw that the vacuum unit has been taken out at some point ,i have read on the haynes manual today ,it says
"" if required the ignition coil may be removed after disconnecting the 2 wires and undoing the 4 retaining screws .Do not however ,attempt to remove the vacuum unit ,as it is attached internally
by a very fine wire which will break if the unit is removed ""
do you know how this would affect the running of the engine if my vacuum unit is removed and unservicable ??
thanks

Well, most likely if vacuum unit is broke, it is using athmosphere vacuum, 100kpa.

This is just example of advance table, as it will be different in your car, but this is what I'm using now.
As you can see 100kpa is line at top and if ingition unit is using 100kpa whole time, then your part throttle area will have problems, low performance and more fuel consumption.
That is however easy to test, take out vacuum hose from renix and use bolt or something to seal it, drive around a bit and then put vacuum hose back to renix unit and drive around bit more, if you can feel power gain on part throttle then vacuum unit in renix is working.
It is much harder to feel lost power for some reason so that is why you need to reconnect it and take new test drive
I can't say that I would know a lot from these, just little part from there and other from here

thanks a lot mate
my fuel consumption is very high at the moment and cant feel the power that 92 horses are supposed to give either
can you explain what exactly do you mean by "part throttle " please?
i will do this test tomorrow and let you know the outcome

There's an easier way to test the vacuum advance.
Remove the vacuum hose and plug it up so it doesn't leak air, then run the car at 2500RPM. Plug the hose back onto the Renix and confirm the revs rise. If so then all is OK.

nice one ,cheers
would there be a significant rise in the revs doing this ???
and also will the revs drop if the vacuum unit is buggered??

I have had little problems with this method as when I try to put vacuum hose back to renix it usually sucks air or something and I have not been sure if that would caused rev rise or not, so I have found driving to be easier for me. Yes, my thumbs are bit middle of hands
With part throttle I mean cruising at stedy speed, so there is little throttle applied but not floored, so it's part throttle

done the vacuum test today ,pulled the manual choke to rev the car at constant 3k while the car is revving i pulled the little pipe out of the vacuum thingy ,
no change at the revs /engine speed at all ,not even a change in the tone of the engine sound . and as soon as i push the choke all the way back in ,the revs go down to 400-500 and the car stalls .
so the vacum thing is fecked ,anybody know if one from a lets say 1.4 or another car would fit ?
