The Redline went back to the garage yesterday. They replaced all of the shocks recently and one of them was faulty (Boge).quote]

I Have had a lot of boge shocks fail in recent years. Stange that as the are part of Bilstein and I have never had a problem with one of them or sachs!

Bought 240 20.4.2007 and now that has costed to me 2873 euros already in 6206km, there is all costs, even car price included.

Actually this month has been rather easy, not driven a lot, but repair costs have been bit high, also new tires etc. trying to make it pass MOT which is due in two weeks, however I'm leaving to business trip before that which lasts two weeks so have to fix all next week, busy times.

What happened then Chris/Nick/Steve? I'm guessing the handbrake failed and the car rolled off the driveway?

I'm still waiting for Fioner to be welded, so nothings really happening at the moment, well not Volvo related anyway. I've mostly been trying to kill myself in the Rover in this weather though! It's a bit twitchy!

Well... I came back from a pub trip (I'd been on coke... before anyone says I forgot to put the handbrake on...) and went to bed. Then a loverly policewoman was knocking rather loudly at my door, and asked if our house was anything to do with a blue 340, which seemed to have gone a wandering off the drive and was blocking both sides of the A35.

Humbug. No idea why, handbrake was on, but not in gear, she reckoned idiots could have bounced it, I'm trying to suss out!

Hmm, strange one. You did mention to me on MSN that the handbrake still felt a bit 'nothing' even after you fixed everything, so maybe it hadn't held too well. There are incidences of handbrake cables expanding with heat and cars having a walk down hills.

Lucky no-one was hurt.

Lucky no one got hit then!

Back a few years ago when I had a Rover 214 I was driving past a house and an un-manned Vectra came rolling out of the driveway and took out the front corner of the car. Same thing - handbrake was on but not in gear. I wasn't happy!

Hey, don't worry, I've been through the scenarious. Fake is currently sideways across the drive, so it can't happen again. I had just come through the lanes, so it could have got warm and cooled down.

Same thing happened to me many moons ago. My 345 decided that it would prefer to be parked broadside to the road rather than on the drive.

Always leave in gear ;)

Here's a question I've always wondered, what stops the engine turning in reverse? e.g. rolling backwards if left in first, or forwards if left in reverse? Or is it just the compression in the engine provides resistance no matter which way turned, and that just adds resistance as opposed to making rolling impossible?

Yeah it's always the compression in the engine that stops it from moving, but with a steep enough hill that can be overcome in a petrol engine and it doesnt matter which way you're facing, the engine will still turn backwards!. Would have to be bloody steep to get a diesel engine moving though.

Part of my drive is on a hill and I too always use the handbrake and leave the car in gear after the Vectra incident!

Well, she passed with flying colours. No problems at all :)

Ah I see, thanks Carl. I always thought you had to be in first when facing uphill, and reverse when facing down, sounds like it doesn't matter. I turn the wheels toward the curb as well on particularly steep hills. Can't be to careful ;)
