It makes you wonder why more ppl do not see it that way in the uk.
When I look at what I spend on my old cars its shocking but comparing to the cost of running a new car its dirt cheap.

Fuel cost are about the same and the old volvo is as reliable as any new car if not better!

But look at it from the average consumer's point of view. My old Volvo has cost me roughly a grand in the past month / 6 weeks - purchase, insurance and a good service. I saw an advert for a new Clio t'other day that amazed me; £189 down, and then £99 per month for four years. At the end give them some money, or walk away from it. If you are maxed on credit cards, or just have a small amount of cash available, the new car is just the simple option. Insurance for the Clio would probably be cheaper than the Volvo for 10,000 miles per annum.

The Clio is probably NCAP 5 stars, whilst the Volvo would probably score less than zero. Most people would look at my grand spend on an old car and think I was daft, seeing as they can get a new one for less than £200.

Wonder why we are in a credit crisis with offers like that around!

And a lot of people think old cars run on magic and that if something goes wrong with them they aren't repairable. So they prefer to get something with all servicing included.

And of course, don't get me started on the 'status' thing. It boils my p!ss.
