I've flooded it a few times (40s may as well be a hosepipe LOL), but allowed it to clear each time. The last attempt saw the car being towed in 2nd by the 740, plenty of rpm and backfiring so I'm sure the fuel was getting out somewhere
I'll fit my FPR, check the CPS, look for a 1.7 renix, and report back.

Cheers man, should be good for at least 150hp if tuned right.

Joni, I'll try all that this evening and see if it helps, cheers mate.

I've just been looking at some 340 threads on driftworks, and some are claiming to have hit 9500rpm safely and repeatedly! Is this even remotely possible? I was going to take 8k as my safe limit, but change up earlier depending on where the power is.

Cheers man, I'll try the idle setup you suggested before, and get in touch when I need to fine tune them. I think I'll need a good rolling road too.

I really wouldnt reccomend that RPM mate. The formula renault 8vs only rev to 7200 but will hit 9200 without damage. I would set the limiter at 8k.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, surely it'd start slinging rods out the block at nearly 10k! Even 8k is impressive, a bit more revvy than the 2.0 redblock with slushbox I'm used to these days

we had a similar problem on a 340 vario when the rotor arm had slipped round and was pointing in the wrong direction.

I would check everything is lined up. If you're getting backfiring and popping then you're getting fuel and spark, but just at the wrong time. Even the wrong Renix should be able to get you running, even if it runs badly. Is there any quick way to check that the rotor arm is pointing to the correct plug whilst its on compression stroke?

Good point Andy, I hadn't considered that. I was thinking that even the wrong renix would produce some sort of running, but even so I've bought a 1.7 one to try to get a bit closer. My current favourite suspect is the coil lead, it's a 'hotwires' dealy, and they've been getting slated on retro rides. I'd still expect better running with a dodgy lead though.

Hey John,

Dave was saying that he had the same problem with his old spitfire, turned out for him the timing was out by 180 degrees and it was backfiring through the carbs with flames and what not and sucking air in through the exhaust, so kinda similar to what your experiencing, dunno if this helps but thought it was worth mentioning.

Good Luck Dan
