If you believe the test reports, the MX-5 is a fantastic car. You just can't tell your mates

My dad test drove the first one in 1990 responcible for a road test report or 2
he loved it, but even then it was a bit girly. he much prefered the Elan(that was his car tho..)-faster too! lol

The trouble is after the 300 series, imo Volvo just didn't really make anything that appealing as a drivers car - everything else is just too big and lardy, front wheel drive, lousy steering (worse in newer models!), the only alternative is to look elsewhere for the fun factor! Ok, the T5 lot is fast, but have you ever seen them through corners? They look a total mess, even the S60R looks bloody awful! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86fjHtqmias (Turn away if you hate understeer)
Anyway, thread jack - with a black bumper on that it should look prety tidy Chris!

Re: Chris' Current Daily - Jet
My daily...? Erm...mumble...erm...just ordering new engine...
That is mainly due to my stupidity, though...
The FWD stuff isn't so bad in the twisties. I'm currently driving Ozzy's 940 Turbo (which has lowering springs and (standard, admittedly) Bilstein shocks), and I think a stock T5 would still out-handle it. My S70 is pretty much on a par with a standard 360, handling wise.
As for the Phase 2 Rs...in reality, I imagine they give away relatively little to the RS4 / M3 (especially if chipped), and they're significantly more comfortable than either. The bigger problem with them is that they're right drama queens re: reliability!
I think Tom hits the nail on the head.
cheers
James

Re: Chris' Current Daily - Jet
Yes. Yes, I'm quite convinced a T5 would out handle a 940. I'm also pretty sure Mr Branson's fleet of 747's could out handle a 940.foggyjames wrote:The FWD stuff isn't so bad in the twisties. Ruperts S60 impressed me the other day. Very composed, and didn't look under stress thought mild driving.
MX-5's.. are an interesting breed. I've driven 3 now, and come to the conclusion I don't mind mk1's, hate mk2's (although I could drive it quicker) and love mazdaspeed S/C conversions with quickracks and adj sus. The main thing to hate which is most noticeable in the mk2 is the non linear steering rack. One "o'clocks worth" does a tiny amount of cornering, another "o'clocks worth" makes you spin in tight circles. Which is great, until you hit a pothole, and the wheel gets pulled, and then the rack tries to wind on even more of that ways lock... or to put it short, when you hit a pothole, the car tried to drive into the nearest hedge. With the quickrack, linearity was restored and the world a happier place. I've never known a chassis grip though, the mk2 had Runway Enduros on (death in circular form on 300's) and the mk2 5 just gripped continously.
Anyway, thats enough of that!

Err, it's an S80 - longer, wider, taller more luxurious, better dash, has the option of the 6pot yet is only 50kg more than a S60!!Chris_C wrote: Ruperts S60 impressed me the other day. Very composed, and didn't look under stress thought mild driving.
I must admit to how little effort I had to use to keep up with a hard charging 360. Admittedly the 360 had two people and a few spares/toolkit/rollcage in it so in terms of outright speed the 360 had no chance, equally the 360 had dubious rubber, skinny tyres, the aforementioned extra weight moving about and old worn suspension, but it was in the hands of an experienced driver and I was pushing him hard through the twisties and managing to stay on my side of the road.........
And is doesn't matter how much you try and evade the issue Thhhpaaaayynetah, we still feel sorry for Michelle as you obviously are not able to see to her womanly needs due to your current gay phase!
