A very important feature of a V300. I agree entirely:

Don't do this though, it strains the hinges too much:

I've got problems with the boot lid not shutting well since doing that.

Sorry about the swearing.. I couldn't spot any rules anywhere so did a google Site search for the word f**c... Got loadsa results so assumed it was ok. I'm used to forums full of swearing is all, but I'll stick a lid on it!

Fiddlesticks:D

Fuel lines / pump replacement.. Cool. I assume there's no major trouble there, being a fairly modern car.. Replacing the whole fuel line on a beetle can be a PITA, it runs through the central tunnel and there's no way of getting at it! What pressure should a 'high pressure' pump be putting out? Would a 6.5 - 7.25 psi / 35 gallons per hour Facet pump do the trick?

RE: the heaterbox.. Thanks for the pics, I can see how that could cause some problems.. How much it it to have the manifold sorted?

I may live without heat for a while if it's pricey, I do have to keep it cheapo if possible:)

Also, not reeealy important, but I'm curious now.. Does the spare wheel still fit under the bonnet with a 16v conversion?

I'm going to link to the F7P engine swap wiki I've been trying to create! Basically, I'm trying to collate all our collective f7p engine swap knowledge into one place. Since I've started doing the swap, I've realised, it's actually fairly easy, I have limited mechanical knowledge, and I'm coping so far!

It's had a slight update, since I've now removed the old engine.

Hope this is helpful for anyone considering the conversion, and that anyone can add to it as they see fit!

Spare wheel might fit at a push, but i think the inlet manifold sticks out just that tad too far really. espesially as the space where it would sit comes in handy for ecu/ fuel pipes etc.

I live with out the heater box in mine, but then mine gets really hot quickly and is toasty, the other option i have considered is to keep the actual heater element(radiator) thats under the dash in place and connected up with a valve from a 1.4 which you can just turn of and off like a tap. that would allow the hot water in to warm the car and then you can turn it of with the switch.

Excellent wiki link there!! I've bookmarked that for a proper read when I get back from work:D

kaos, cheers for the info:)

Valve switch thing sounds like it could have potential...

Still searching for a 1.7, been all over the internet looking:D

Looks like it may have to be a 1.4 and a bunch of parts chasing instead... Is the 1.4 driveline the same as the 1.7? Gear ratios and all that?

Cheers:)

Adam is your man for the inlet manifold, others may do it too but he got mine done for me, he is 340GLT on here. He is a wealth of information and a top bloke to boot aswell.

I think all the engine conversions will get hotter than a stock one, but i personaly wanted to keep the heater box so i can use it all year round in all weathers.

It's a work in progress Jonofdoom, but hopefully everyone can add to it, and it'll be useful to all! The point is, it's really not as daunting as I first thought to swap the engines!

As for which car to put it in - find a car in as good condition as possible. With the work you're going to put in, it's worth having something that will last a few more years at least!

I got a mint 1.4 3dr with 30k on it for £200, and a scabby 1.7 for £100 as a donor. That way, I've got all the parts to put the F7P into my nice looking, good condition 3dr.

The gearboxes are the same between the 1.7 and 1.4. I'd suggest thinking about handling improvements you can make too, as all the power isn't going to be as fun when you're wallowing all over the road!

Gearboxes are but diff ratios are different so affects all gears. Car will accelerate quicker on a 1.4 gearbox than on a 1.7 box but achieve higher top speed on 1.7 box.

Interesting, I did not know that. I guess I could have looked in Haynes though! Probably why a 1.7 is more economical at motorway speeds too.

Cool..

The diff ratio is yet another thing that ticks the 1.7 box, I'm doing a fair bit of motorway miles at the moment.. Work and parts money needed on a 1.4 keeps adding up, but I do like the idea of buying based on condition rather than engine size, and I suppose everything can be changed at a later date.. Pain in the arse though!

RE: handling, so far my only plans are 2" lowering all round and wider wheels / tyres, seems like a decent place to start. I believe springs / blocks are available from a fella here.. I've noticed some folk have added an extra leaf to each spring on the rear, but I suppose that kind of stuff can wait till I've driven it about for a little bit. Lowering and wheels will be ASAP I think, do let me know if there's anything else I should be thinking about doing straight away!

Ta:)
