No.
I'm in Sri Lanka at the mo and seen a few Mk3 1.4 saloons with A/C up for sale at £2800-£3000.
AFAIK used car values are always reeeally low in "developed" countries. In "developing" countries, where there are fewer cars around, and it's "normal" for a car to be rusty and full of dents, prices are usually much higher.

I think Japan is one of the countries with the highest depreciation in new cars. It's so uncool to drive a used car there, that values come clattering down to next to nothing in the first few years, meaning cars get scrapped after only 5 or 6 years or get sold on to Wladiwostok ...

That is truly amazing!, and a good explanation from Tom.

I quite simply love my 340 because it reminds me of other cars and is familiar, a bit like a cortina, but the dash and instruments, first thing you see when u get in the car remind me of an AE86, it's the character of the whole shape that i like about it and it's just different.
I simply would not part with my own 340 now as i am hooked although

"That GLT sure does look like a fine wagon to be rollin in".

The other angle on this is that if the car really is totally rust free, and the paint is perfect...that saves you potentially thousands of pounds. How many mk2 GLTs that good are actually left?

A few people know how much my mk1 GL"S" will have had spent on it by the time it's finished, and it makes this GLT look like quite good value!

cheers

Sorry James, but people very rarely get money back on classics, it's not how it works.

Just because you've spent £lots does not make the car worth £lots. Otherwise e-type basket cases would be cheap still, which 99% of the time they really arn't.

Or, at the other end of the scale, a riced up saxo with 10 grands worth of stereo and bodykit would be worth 10grand...

It does depend though Chris....

I suppose if someone wants a mint 3 door 360 GLT then you have little choice other than this one!! Plus for a car with only 2yrs worth of mileage it's not bad. I still wouldn't pay more than a grand though because there are better deals to be had!

I wasn't trying to make out that that car is worth the money, or that my car will be worth several thousand...but...what are your options? My point is that at the moment you could pretty easily spend £1000+ on a mk1/2, and still find that it needs at least the same again spending on the bodywork (assuming you won't DIY it). The £200 I spent on my mk1 will hardly have proven to be a bargain in the grand scheme of things, given the money it has needed.

Spending £1k on a clean one (if such a thing had existed!) would have been a better investment. There's a pretty strong argument for saying that spending £2k+ on an absolutely perfect one is cheaper than sinking a total of £4k (say, for example, £200 purchase, £3800 repairs...not the numbers for my car, I'm pleased to say...but not *that* far off) into one. Of course that does assume it is absolutely perfect...

cheers

Foggys logic is sound.
Which i think everyone pretty much agrees on.
its better to buy a good example (though expensive) car, compared to buying a 'bargain' and falling into the bottomless hole of renovation. fanancially anyway.

The only sticking point in this case, is the price.
The lad paid under a grand for it (probably a very sensible value).
the 'value' of the car is pretty much set by him paying that price. They dont come up often so the best guide is the value of the last one sold.

Then its washed, hoovered and re-listed for two and a half times its established value. :!:

The value of ANY car is exactly what someone will pay for it at the end of the day.
If someone ends up paying 2.5k for it, then its worth it to them..................

Of course nobody will, because the consensus seems to be its only worth 1k. or 1.5 with a following wind.

Agreed Ben....and just in case anyone thinks I've become a cock overnight, I was just playing devil's advocate...:)

I think £1-1.5k is a reasonable figure, depending on just how clean it really is. To be honest, I wouldn't *expect* to pay much less than a grand for a mk2 GLT now.

yip, i gladly payed a lot of money for my mk3 340T; it is hard as hell. so proffesional restauration will turn out cheaper and higher quality than patching up a car.

i still think that when you seriously get to restauring or modifying any car, you don't sell it after it's done. allways spend the money for yourself and nobody else.

Agreed mate. I have some weird affliction that I enjoy the fixing as much as driving (well... on a raining thursday night when its dark, a nadger less than the driving... but still)

Chequebook modding or restoring cars will never be cheap, I've seen a lot of rally cars and classics done that way. Normally the owners of them have a very different reason for wanting one though, compared to those who want to build the car themselves. Foggy is a special case imo, he is the kind who wants to do it himself, yet is just so fed up of having a million projects and no 300s to drive he caved in

That's basically it. What's wrong with most of my cars (i.e. rust) is not something I can fix with my current tools and skill-set, and I was fed up with cheap people doing a terrible job. Yeah, I should just get on with learning to weld...but ironically, quite a bit of the (relatively limited amount of) work the 343 needed was not really for a beginner, and I just got fed up of having nothing fun to drive.

Welding supplies and practice are one of my next jobs now the weather is slightly less foul. The garage has been cleared out sufficiently to be able to weld without setting fire to stuff, and I've even got some spare funds to buy the necessary gear!

Anyway, I've got to learn...I won't be able to afford to get someone else to do it again in a hurry!

cheers

Price is up to 3K now  , maybe the owner really does not want to sell it, ......another 300 addict in the making, just bubble wrap it and keep it for me until i save the cash, or £20 a week for 3 years 340pw

A year ago i forked out £4OO quid for my 1983 mint 360GLS.Its the most money i have spent
on a car in a long time. I needed two bottles of scotch and a six pack of Guinness to get over
the shock.   Mybee the old girl is worth a bit more now.
Cheers Mark. sm4
