on the temperature gauge front, my valver did the same thing (It uses the 1.4 temp sender) and it turned out the be temp sender itself rather than a problem with the cooling system.
Might be worth a shot before you start throwing money other parts.

Yer, well i'm going to get myself another one as it sounds more so that then the thermostat. Where did you get your sender from btw? Did you manage to source one new or did you have to get a used one?

Either way i've bought another thermostat for it now. For how little they cost it's worth replacing just for peace of mind. I didn't get chance to change it tonight, although Plugs, Leads, Dissy Cap and Rotor arm have all been replaced now the old plugs didn't look as bad as I originally thought so i've kept them for spares, as does the old rotor arm and leads the dissy cap however looked pretty well worn so i've slung that. I think on the ignition side of things *touch wood* I should be all hunky dory now

It got me to and from work today with no problems whatsoever so i'm dead chuffed with that! Just about to head onto Ebay and order me up a headunit ISO converter so I can get an aftermarket headunit in there

I got the sender by luck more than anything else.

I went into a local independent motor factors, asked them for the part and after 10mins rummaging around in the store room he had managed to find one in stock!

but i cant see it being a problem finding one new. they were used on all sorts of cars. (Renault 5s etc.)

Yer, I just found a couple on Ebay which look promising! Gonna probably order one in a sec

Hmmm well i've just been for a quick nosey out at the car and I think i've identified my temp sender, at the front of the cylinder head near to where the thermostat is situated.

I pulled the connect off it and goddamn the thing is cruddy as hell! If this is the temp sender I think I can see why it's not working correctly, look!



So i've just given both terminals a good scrub with wire wool and electrical cleaner and i've put it back on, so we'll see how things go on the drive to work tomorrow! May not need to splash out on a new one just yet!

Those are the easy sender to get. Try finding a Smiths one when you want it.

Right then, quick update! Drove to work this morning in the hope to see the needle sitting below half way as it should during normal driving to which, no luck No worries, it got me there and back no worries!

Once home I gave it about an hour to cool down enough to work on, i'd picked up some fresh new jubilee clips from work also. Got the top rad hose off and swapped the thermostats over, bled it up and took it out for a spin, the result?...

FIXENATED it's heating up to just under half way now and stays there, as it should, that should help the ol' boy run a bit better, i'm sure running too cool all the time can't have been helping him run to his best.

Thats another job jobbed . Next up, the weekend, oil change and aux belt change and try identify the small exhaust leak me thinks!

It was sitting just above the "C" all the time while driving. In traffic etc. it'd creep upto the fans kicking in point as it should, but as soon as you carried on driving again, went straight back down to just above the "C" again

Ta, I fitted a new sender to mine before Christmas and it would never get past a quarter-scale (just over C on a Smiths), even when gunning it down the motorway. On shorter runs it'd be lucky to hit the green banding. I did swap the sender for another new one (two-tag original) and it would read exactly the same. Now I put it down to it being a) feckin' freezing and b) engine-driven fan c) no muff, but I never plucked the thermostat out to see. I've got a 92º C one to try out.

That's exactly what mine was doing, and as you can see in one of my above posts I was thinking it was the sender, but in the end it was what I first expected, the thermostat. I dunno what should be in yours but in my 1.4 it's the 86-89 degree range

Well the original sender was just plain duff, didn't read at all. I still have it, so might scientifically test it in the saucepan when the Mrs is out.

The second sender was a stab-in-the-dark for one that would fit the hole, and if I was lucky, give a reading of somesort on a Smiths gauge, but being only single tag, having to lose the temperature warning light.

The third sender was a DAF Club Nederlands, sourced Volvo original. So the warning light is back in the game, but the reading is the same on the needle as the £4 second one.

I think it should have an 89º C, but as were experiencing a mini-Ice Age, I'll go for a 92º C. If we ever have that Indian-summer, then I'll go back to 89º C.

Hey guys well a bit of an update on the old boy although unforunately I can't say it's the most interesting of updates

Last week I had been paid and first purchases for Vince were Oil, Oil Filter, Fuel Filter and Fan belt. Last weekend I set out and made a start, dropped the oil and while that was draining off I took the old belt off ready to replace with the new item.

If you've seen my thread on belts you'll know the next part lol. Went to fit the new belt and was a right f*cking pain! So much so it didn't go on, I cross referenced belt lengths to find Halfrauds had supplied me with the older (shorter) belt, doh! (Luckily with my trade card the belt was less than a quid anyway lol!)

So anyway, I reluctantly re-fitted the old belt and carried on sorting the oil change out, I haven't done the fuel filter yet as I want to try get hold of a refurb kit for the original fuel pump including the original little filter inside as the one I got was basically a universal inline filter, so I want to do the fuel side of things in one hit.

After sorting the oil side of things out fired him up and sounded happier and checked for leaks etc. while the car was up in the air I got underneath and began to diagnose the exhaust blow. F*ck me no wonder the thing was so loud with your foot down! It's recently had a new mid-section fitted and either end was absolutely bellowing out exhaust fumes! I'm suprised any emmisions actually reached the tailpipe lol!

Knocked the engine off and I'd got some exhaust putty and exhaust bandages in the garage so patched up either ends and it's running alot better! Quieter, smoother and better on the ol' juice, top b*llock After that I called it a day!

That weekend i'd been keeping my eye on an awsome oldskool Mountney steering wheel in funky off white/creamish leather on ebay which luckily I won It turned up Wednesday and I can't wait to fit it, looks mega pimp hehe!



Just awaiting for VND to move into his new home so I can buy his steering boss from him he has up for grabs and i'll get that badboy fitted!

So we come to today... Yesterday I picked up my correct sized belt from Car Spares, got home from work earlier and quickly got on the job of swapping it over. This is why I was so desperate to get it changed.....



Doing 30-70miles a day comfortably along the likes of the M6, A38, A5, I knew that belt hadn't got much life left in it so made sure I got that nipped in the bud before it bit me in the ass! Probably the most essential £5 i've spent on the car up to yet lol! After I did that I've just been having a little tat cleaning up the engine bay a little. Wouldn't mind over time slowly cleaning it up and making it near pristine!

So that's it so far, as I say no the most exciting update sorry lol! Oooo yer! I also picked up a pair of landy shocks last week ready for the lowering to begin ended up buying Terrafirma Nitrogen gas shocks, look pretty swish lol! If my order isn't placed with Dai this month for blocks and springs it'll definately DEFINATELY be getting placed beginning of next month still awaiting on my friend to finish using the 15's i'm planning on buying from him too! Getting there slowly!
