The Rover V8 is also a CRAP V8. Us Brits are supposed to be in love with them, but there are very few affordable tuning parts available, and as you say they drink fuel to a daft extent!

Fuel consumption is rumoured to be what ultimately killed off the Volvo redblock - no matter what they did, they couldn't make it give decent MPG.

You need to do a bit more to a B230ET to get 250bhp - that lot will see you to about 220bhp. Beyond that, you need more fuel - more fuel than a chip can map for - we're talking bigger fuel pump, higher FPR, and bigger injectors. The B230FT needs more still due to the (lesser) 530 head and T cam.
