I would check the fuel pressure out but its a mystery to me too. When you first start it does it idle and at what speed?
I was talking to chris about it and if all else fails i will bring a load of stuff up to York. The fuel pump is one i ran in mine for ages. Mine was never great on fuel but never that bad.
What ECU are you runnning now? And what chip?
Adam
It does idle, same speed it will idle at warm which is around 1000. It will fluctuate about 50-100 each way constantly (so up, down, up, down etc). I'm running your old ecu.
Just a small update, haven't been able to get a fuel pressure meter yet, it'd be special order from sealey. I played around with the fuel regulator which made no difference, all I know is a half turn anti-clockwise on the top screw will stall the engine. Turning any amount clockwise will make no difference to firing. I found my source of the smell of fresh fuel - the regulator was leaking from the adjuster bolt/blue hose that goes to manifold. Bolt "gaskets" were ok so tightened everything up. Hopefully that'll be the end of it.
Fuel pressure was at 4 bar Also the idle air valve had got sticky. Another more recent problem (running on 3 cylinders) was caused by a dodgy injector plug. Now my car runs sweet as, averaged about 20-25mpg approx on the way home. Not great but that was mixed lanes/country roads. Thanks for the help Adam as always
edit: forgot to add, the timing belt tensioner was seizing. Replacement was fitted although 5 minutes after removing it, the old one seized solid. As adam's mate put it: "Dodged a bullet there"
