volvodspec wrote:for a hot cam + twin carbs you definatly need to ditch the original Renix, you can advance all you like; the curve is waaaay off so it will allways misfire/backfire, instead a new ignition unit such as the 123-ignition models can be used; these can be programmed for a spefic engine setup
whats a 123 ignition?
is it a whole system? hard to fit?

I'm running with Renix...no issues at all:

Yeah, more advance will be nice, but it works.

No criticism of Andy's car, because it runs well (and he gets way better fuel economy!)...but...mine would beat it comfortably in a "real" drag race. That comparison we did was WOT from tick-over (in third?)...not exactly a "real world" test.

However unlike yours, Andy's car will be significantly quicker through corners. The powerband in it is gorgeous, much unlike your carbs

I'd not want to put money on either.

Yeah, the 343's suspension is knackered. Got all the bits to sort it out. Just need the car back...

As for the powerband...that's what a gearbox is for, jeez! There's a big rich-spot at WOT below about 2500rpm which I could no doubt (at least partly) tune out if I could be bothered...but who drives like that (in anger) in a car with a 270 degree cam anyway? Half throttle is fine down there (for town driving, and on the motorway, etc)...and if you want to get on it, drop a cog. I haven't bothered doing anything about it for 4 and a half years, so it can't be that bad!

To give you an idea of why I'm suggesting doing something about the EFI manifold...I remember Andy commenting that MS on his car recorded *vacuum* at high RPM at WOT. This is not good for peak horsepower...it's perfectly useful for other things, but if you want a high-revving NA build...that manifold is going to hold you back. I guess you could fit a bigger throttle body as a compromise.

cheers

James

Lowering blocks and lowering springs are availible from classicswede on here. Have a look at his thread in the for sale section.

Car looks good, the air intake must be quite restrictive with pipework that long though. Maybe you could mount the air filter over on the cold side and reduce the length of the pipework?

Wheels look nice, a bit lower and with your new spoiler it will be looking sweet.
