You should try Romania in winter. God! Entering my grandfather-in-law's flat is like going into a sauna

-20 outside, +30 inside ... roughly.
It's raining here ATM

Pity, was hoping for a white Christmas...

Like jtbo said, most problems occur with the piping and sewer systems which will freeze easily if there are any defects in insulation.
What insulation ???
There are pipes running here and there, but there are no insulation, main water pipe runs in basement, which has 0 insulation and 0 heating, as this is build in 1950's there was no water closet originally, so it was added at some point during 1970's, WC floor is near subzero temps and sewer pipe has only sand around it, I just can't get my head around about how it is not freezing constantly
I was in a hotel (expensive one, company's christmas thing) earlier this week, there was insanely hot indoor temp, something like +25C as I'm used to +18-20C there was some heavy sweating because of that.
My shower is downstairs and upstairs and downstairs is connected with non heated or insulated space, it is quite odd sensation when running upstairs with towel around you, feet are freezing to stairs like being glued with instant glue and hair is freezing solid.
Warm welcome to visit Finland during our winter, swimming is increasingly popular hobby:
Phoned mother today and she told that she did swim also this morning in -27C temp that was in her place during that time, complained that her swimming shoes got stuck on ice, but claimed that it was not cold at all

Get a policeman it's far quicker for them to section someone compared to a doctor.
She's obviously a loon

^ your mam is rather Hardcore dude.
I had a fail today.
Car dead. No dash lights. No anything
I Diagnose broken battery due to cold air.
Ring someone more adept (john).
John diagnoses slack alterator belt causing no charge at low revs.
Uttilise crowbar, sockets, screwdriver, tea, labrador piss (this bit was not helpfull at all, but the laberador was insistent) swearing and a torch to manouvre altenator further away (!?) to increase tension.
Tension increased.
Magic returned.
Hi fives and chips all round.

When I need to lift something heavy, I ask my mother who is bit under 150cm tall, she can lift far more than I can, but she has been competing at national ironman like competition (triathlon, 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bicycling and marathon in under 17 hours time), so that is why, however I would be very careful with my words near her if I were you, she has rather quick temper and you really can't outrun her and as she is trained athletics massager, she knows how to make pain, yes I have learned that hard way
Anyway swimming in hole at ice is popular here, almost every municipality has at least one maintained place for such activity and there are several people visiting those places daily, it is good for health, helps to avoid cancer, fixes cold hands etc. However you will not get me to do that.
But then again, almost all Finns are bit crazy, think about rallying

I have a Gransfors Bruks maul.
I do not fear her.
Please explain if you will how swimming in near freezing water is beneficial for cold hands.
Unless your core temperature is lowered to the point of being unable to register pain.
Doesn't seem to make much sense to me I'm afraid.
More snow here

It exercises blood circulation, veins near surface are stimulated with sudden cold and learn to expand and shrink again, cold hands are because veins are not expanding enough. As everything in human body, even veins can be trained, heck you can train even your bones, if you run regularly, your bones are stronger than if you don't run, shock waves cause bones to build themselves to withstand them, body of human being is highly adaptive, so with proper training you can have much superior features compared to one that spends most of his time at front of computer screen (me)
Also one added bonus from cold treatment is that you will not get sick so easily as body faces threats of getting sick regularly, it also produces stuff to battle against common flu more eagerly, also as you don't need so hot room temp when you are often exposed to cold, there is less viruses and bacteria in your house, they like warm temperatures, so in +24C there is higher chance to get infected and sick than +20C, one just needs to train himself by exposing himself to cold.
That is at least theory behind it.
There is also cold room treatments, you go to room where is -100C or so, that has helped many who has issues with joints etc. Weird things, imo.
I'm getting enough cold treatment when I go to get firewood and can't find my gloves...

They claimed just few years ago that polar bears are suffering from heat, even population was all time high, I don't hear them now
I'm bit worried about cats, sleeping in a small box for several days can't be good for their mental health
Oh and luckily Polar Bears are seen more at salty water, our lakes don't interest them it seems

Average temperature of 24th is -28.2C, that is not very warm, but certainly bit better than 23rd's -31C average temperature, still weather is more than I prefer, hoping to see milder weather that is promised from late saturday to monday, maybe even tuesday, some snowing is forecasted too, but then cold returns.
This week is now at -24.1C as an average temp, but that will probably change as milder weather comes, but there is only 2 days left this week and forecast for next 12 hours is pretty similar weather as of now, meaning -27-28C temps, however forecasts are often wrong here.
Whole week will probably be around -20-22C average temp, anyway you are lucky not to get these arctic chills first, it is moving towards you now

I did read that N.Ireland Belfast there are 40 000 without water as pipes being frozen, that sounds quite bad
You can make water from snow if you boil it and if snow is fresh, but don't ever do mistake of making water out of old snow as there can be mouse's pee or something else hidden and boiling does not help to all nasty stuff. Only fresh snow and surface most layer of it is safe to use. Having diarrhoea and no water access is probably one of the things in life one could do better without
