The rad's fine, it was flushed when I put the new coolant in there and came through clear immediately. 'stat was checked and found to open and close as it should, so was replaced whence it came.

Yeah, it needs an exorcist rather than a mechanic.....
Buy some of this kit from eBay and do the job yourself.
