my f7p conversion list, advice needed.
Re: my f7p conversion list, advice needed.
ok so after having a gander at another f7r conversion at the weekend, i have noticed that the bellhousing needs the 1.7 rear subframe crossmember to mount the bellhousing rubbers to.
as far as im aware the 1.4 has not got said subframe brace mount points?
so is this another part to ad to the shopping list?

This rear subframe keeps coming up and I don't know where from. I put my turbo engine(with 1.7 bellhousing) into an ex 1.4 and there was no difference that I could tell between them, it bolted up fine.
Is your 1.4 bellhousing not fixed to the subframe?

Re: my f7p conversion list, advice needed.
the rear subframe is universal for all 3 series and only difference is in LHD and RHD (steering rack mountings + speedo cable). if you look at the subframe from a 360 you'll see that there are 6 extra holes where the 1.4/1.7 rear engine mounts should bolt to.
the only difference between the rear engine mounts that bolt onto the subframe is that the 1.7 has a tiny gap in them for the clutch cable, for the 1.4 mounts this is nothing that a grinder can't solve.
front engine mounts; all 340's (and 343/345's) with 1.4 engine had straight up engine mounts untill MY86, if you want an F7R or equivalant in a MY85 or older car you need to swap the front crossmember/engine mount and anti-rollbar from a later model (1.4 or 1.7) the front crossmember of a 1.7 has 2 extra mounting points to the chassis; it is stronger so that's why it's preffered, but don't consider it essential since the engine mounts themself cope with most of the load.
