Wow, that's not even close to fitting...I thought it was less decisive than that!

Haha yeah funny that, 'cause it's out of a 240 if I remember right and supposedly it was straight fit so how did they manage to get a 240 diff into a 360 with just a bit of grinding on the bolts :S

Anyways today we got in a 940gle (I think) with a buggered engine (B230FB) so IF the guy doesn't want to pay for a headjob then I was suggesting if I could have the engine and see if I can fit the B200E head onto it while I wait to get my real project engine sorted :P

That diff will go in a 300 casing but you need custom bearing retainers made and custom drive cups.

Shame, as the FB has a 531 head!

It looks way too big to fit in those pics, Adam. Is it deceptive? Presumably it'll need different bearing housings to place them further out...and I guess you'd need to use the 240 crownwheel, as the outside edge of that diff looks about the same size as the 360 crownwheel! Presumably you'd also need to work on the pinion.

Yeah, no way of fitting it into the 360? I really don't want to have to weld the diff 'cause sliding into every corner isn't exactly what I want.
EDIT: sorry I misread. It's fairly bigger than the stock differential, but when I measured from where the bearings sit to the ends of the bearings on the differential it gave me quite a close measurement. The differential did come with bearing retainers, not sure if they're the right ones though. Mums wreck is still sitting in the garage 'cause my brother wants to rip out the cd player before getting it towed out but when I get the volvo in we're going to take a better look into the whole situation.

So the head from the B200 wouldn't fit? :( I thought there might be a chance since they're both red block engines?

It'll fit but the 531 is slightly superior.

The cam pulley was 180 degrees out somehow, but the engine hadn't seized up so too bad.
The reason I wanted to chuck on the head from the 360 was 'cause wouldn't it give better compression?

Not necessarily. Compression is usually determined by the pistons on redblocks. I believe we CC'd a 530 and 531 chamber a while, and concluded they were pretty much identical in capacity (albeit a slightly different shape). There's not much difference...if you had both sat side by side in identical condition, you'd always use the 531...but I'd use a 70k mile 530 over a 200k 531 (exactly what I have sat here, as it happens...).

Aw yeah fair enough.

Well I've been doing some thinking and since I've had this engine in the garage for a while just waiting to be exhanged I'm going to be going there tomorrow and telling them they've got 2 weeks to get me something.
I've been waiting a fair long time and it's just not moving anywhere, I don't want to end up having an engine from 1 car and an ecu from another without a harness in my hands.

EDIT: Happy days. They just got a Volvo v70 xc in from which they were able to provide me with an ecu and a harness! I also told them to hang onto the electric cooling fan for me. Now I can stick with the B5234, and the disassembling can begin

Yeah, got the sump off on the weekend. Taking off flywheel this weekend but I don't think I'll be able to get the crank pulley off since I don't have an impact gun at home! I'll see if we can work something out, then I could be able to get the head off aswell :)

The crank pulleys are a real bastard on those. You can get a redblock one off quite easily, but a whiteblock one is a problem without a counterhold or an impact gun.

Yeah we got the flywheel off and tried to hold it with a crowbar on 1 bolt from that side but it would just slip.

On another note we got the head and cams removed, now getting the cam gears off is going to be a pain.

More progress maybe tomorrow or next week, here's some pictures of today's work.

Do you need to remove the cam gears? They're adjustable, and it'll be timed up at present...so I'd not touch them unless you have to.

Yeah I probably won't need to, just clean everything up and replace seals and bearings. Just thought dad would make me remove 'em as usual.
