Can you grab a piccy mate. Memory is telling me the two hoses should be one each side of the plate, not a tpiece first... but mine has the electric preheater. We'll work out whats going on then... as I'm pretty certain 88 should be electric, hence you've had a replacement carb at some point, and it sounds like the preheater bits have been specialised.
Granted, all the above is just a punt at the mo, and I'm expecting someone to come along and tell me I'm wrong!

Obviously its' dark out at 3 in teh morning, this is the best I could get... Do say if you want better ones or anything:D
And I also got a couple of serial numbers.. I'll link these to save flooding the page with loads of pics.
72111 (V3) 0 (02)
85 8 63_3
I only noticed the brass plaque number when I checked the pics, or I'd have got a better photo..I think it starts with F 13 and ends in 28-34-2-10. Lemme know if it's needed and I'll check tomorrow.
Thanks again for the help!

So plugs and leads didn't sort it, dammit. Took a while trying in the Halfords car park to get it running again!
Strangely enough I got it running twice with number 4 plug out before it eventually started with it in..
Gonna grab a coil from my local GSF if I can get it going again.. Another £20, bringing the post purchase spends up to £80 that should've been spent on lowering blocks and springs, dammit:D

Hmm, I think I might be an idiot....
New coil made no difference.. I removed all plugs and checked for spark one last time.. And I realized that (I think) plugs need to be earthed to something to spark when not in the head! Errrrrrm, dam. So basically I'm getting spark and probably have been all this time.. The problem remains. Like I said, i think I might just be an idiot... Sorry about that folks.
You can see the plugs all sparking away happily here in a
YOUTUBE VID.
Sooo.... Back to square one, except I now know it's not the ignition side of things. So maybe it is flooding? I tried pouring half an egg cups worth of petrol down the carb just now and got nothing.. And I held a lighter to the hole for plug 4 and it set fire.. Petrol! Is there a definitive way of checking if an engine is flooded?
Cheers, and sorry about the idiocy.

check choke mechanism for proper working.
turn ignition on, pull the blue/red wire off the idle jet, "tap" the wire to the jet and you should be hearing a clicking sound.
remove the floater from the carb and test it boillancy (sorry for my english, it mean to say test if it floats)

since you removed the carburatorlid for this test, you can now easaly clean the floaterroom, adjust the floaterheigt (hold carburator lid upsidedown including floater + floaterchamber gasket, measure from gasket till the top of the floater, should be around 33,8mm.)
next, remove the accelerationjets and blow every other channel clean, remove the membramecovers on the side of the carb to check if they aren't tared or leaking and then rebuild the carb

Ok cool, will go and try that lot now..... Thanks!
Hopefully I'll be able to figure it out, never done much work with carbs before... Touch wood:D

Getting a click so the choke mechanism is working!
Floats now....

that's the idle jet working..
for the choke mechanism check, you remove the air filter housing, manually pull the choke leaver on the carb and check if the big choke plate "blocks" the hole in the carb, at the same time mechanically the throttele mechanism will be slightly applied, check if that mechanism is working aswell.

Ahh cool, idle jet working then..
Choke mechanism also working as described in your post, just checked it now..
It's off and apart.. What seems to me like quite a lot of petrol poured out when I flipped it upside down after removing it, there's no doubt it's getting plenty of fuel.. Maybe too much...
just going to test that the buoyancy of the floats now...

cool, step by step we're getting further
get a compressor and blow everything clean, remove the idle jet solenoid to blow trough that hole aswell, all chanels identified by the yellow-brass heads/screws/jets can be blown through aswell, be sure to remove the membrames on the side of the carb before blowing trough all the chanels though, slight chance you blow the membrames apart otherwise!

Floats are suspect!! One is way more floaty than the other... I'll upload a pic now so you can see how they are...

then it's simple: order new floater from a renault or volvo dealer mentioning your carb number (maybe someone on this forum will have the number for the floater & a place to order it) make sure you adjust the floaterheight before bolting the floaterchambercover back tot the carb!
in the meanwhile, check all gaskets, membrames etc for tares or weak spots. now that you have the carb open this is the ideal time to do a refurbishment

That's good news:D:D
Heres the lopsided float:
The fuel cut off valve thing works, I tested it by blowing through it.. Another float will be ordered ASAP!!
Just going to see if I can get my head round adjusting the float height while the carb is off...
All gaskets are good.. I can't figure out what you mean by the membranes though?
EDIT: carb is very clean inside too:)

woow whahahaahahhaa that floater is cool
no seriously, i'm sorry mate couldn't control myself
membranes is the correct wordt according to a translation website? anyways, at the right of the idle jet solenoid there is one, covered with those 4 screws. i haven't worked on 1700's for a while, but there's a very good chance that there are 2 or 3 in total like on the weber. will look that up for you in my documentation, back in 5 min.
